What do you think of Ishbel?

Just wanted some opinions on the name Ishbel as i can't find any previous discussions on it.
I'm probably thinking as more of a middle name than first one. i really like the sound of it.
I have no scottish connections and my main concern was that people may think its Isabel spelt incorrectly by predictive text when we make the announcement.....
i do like names that are a bit different Smile
any opinions appreciated, thanks

I think your prediction is correct and a lot of people will think it is a typo.
Do you like Lisabel? Same problem there though.

PandaG · 02/05/2011 22:42

reminds me of is it Mallory Towers or St Clares? Is a school series I read as a young teen with a character of that name. I like it Smile

cityangel · 02/05/2011 22:51

you're right looks like a poorly spellt Isobel

What about Evelyn, Eibhlean, Israel, Imogen, Anoushka, Bella

Does it go with the first name? I would suggest a more traditional middle name that an unusual first name could fall back on? Unless there's a family connection?

manicinsomniac · 03/05/2011 01:01

I think it's okay but I think Isabel is so much prettier, even if it is really common at the moment.

beautiful name. No problems up here with pronouncing it or anything.

fartingfran · 03/05/2011 06:40

I know a number of Ishbels and nobody has any trouble with the name here (Scotland). It was on my shortlist and in the end we went for another Scottish variation of the name, so it's a thumbs up from me :)

Artichokes · 03/05/2011 06:51

My friend has an Ishbel. We live in the south and she has no Scottish connections. When we got the birth announcement I dud think it was a typo. TBH I am not keen as I don't like the sound "Ish". It's a word ending in my mind "OKish, hottish etc".

meditrina · 03/05/2011 07:07

I like Ishbel. I would probably expect Scottish connexions, but think the name is pretty well established beyond there now.

LawrieMarlow · 03/05/2011 07:28

It was used in the Trebizon books by Anne Digby

She was known as Tish which I felt was a bit of a naff nickname.

PandaG · 03/05/2011 08:27

Ah, Trebizon, thanks! Got those in a box somewhere for DD when she is a bit older (along with Mallory Towers, St Clares etc.)

Prinpo · 03/05/2011 11:17

I love Ishbel, had it on one of our shortlists. I wouldn't think it was a typo.

Are the Trebizon books good? Loved Mallory Towers and St Clares as a child.

bigkidsmademe · 03/05/2011 11:24

Oh l love it, it was on my list until we found out DS was an S! Probably because of Trebizon.

Trebizon was a bit naff I think but perhaps I was a bit too old for them by the time I read them. Certainly not as wonderful as Malory towers, I used to beg my poor mum to send me there!

LuckyWeKeptTheCot · 03/05/2011 11:28

I was at school with an Ishbel - she was Scottish - I think it's very beautiful.

daisybear · 03/05/2011 15:26

Thanks for the opinions peeps

it seems a mix bag of opinions but as it will be a middle name i think i may just go for it. her first name isn't quite so unusual so i don't think too many people will Hmm

Just wondered what people opinions were as there's very little about it on the net/google/mumsnet ect...

thanks again

How do you pronounce it? Like tissue?

Youremindmeofthebabe · 03/05/2011 15:29

That wasn't meant to be rude, btw, so sorry if it did Smile

Youremindmeofthebabe · 03/05/2011 15:30

Fgs, my grammar is appalling recently.

I meant, sorry if it sounded rude.

daisybear · 03/05/2011 16:06
