I have only just discovered i'm pregnant so i know i'm being a little premature, but while i am still enthusiastically thinking about baby names (i soon tired of it when pregnant with DS!) i thought i'd seek out opinions on here.

DS is called george and we have a two syllable surname beginning with K. We like 'normal', traditional names (hence the george) and don't mind popular but don't want something very 'of the moment'. Although 'of the moment' where we live (rural area in the north) is probably not the same as certain other areas!

For boys we like:

Rory
Adam
Toby

All possibly with benjamin as a middle name

For girls we like:

Susannah (was set on this if DS had been a girl but less sure now)
Imogen (only thought of this yesterday and currently loving it)
Esther
Martha

All possibly with the middle name Grace

Any comments gratefully received (although please don't rip my suggestions to shreds!)

Absolutely love George. I like Rory from your list, Toby is okay but I think it is one of those 'of the moment' cutsie names, I'd go with Tobias and use Toby as a nn if you did use it. I'm not a fan of Adam, but it is a perfectly nice name. Some more 'normal' suggestions for you:

Arthur
Christopher (Kit)
Edward
Henry
Monty (Montague/Montgomery)
Rafe
Reuben
Rufus
Seth
Theodore (Theo)
Wilf

...forgot about the girliesShock

Susannah is lovely, but I abhor the nn Suzi/Sooz etc.. If that doesn't bother you then go for it! Imogen is a beautiful name, but again quite 'of the moment' the same ilk as Izzy et al. Esther is nice, but I absolutely love MarthaSmile

Cattleprod · 14/04/2011 14:43

I think it's the law for every George to have a brother called Henry. I know several sets.

But if you want to be rebellious and choose something else Grin I like Adam and all your girls names except Esther, although I prefer Marsha to Martha.

silver28 · 14/04/2011 14:44

Thanks Melina. I think Rory is our favourite at the moment. You know, we are so boring and conservative that some of those on your list are too 'out there' for us (Monty, Rafe, Rufus)! I quite like Christopher/kit and i do like Seth (that was on our shortlist for DS but had forgotten, so thank you for reminding me! I love Reuben but know several.

re girls, I didn't realise imogen was that popular as don't know have any round here. I thought martha was more popular, though do love the name too. If we used Susannah i know we'd end up calling her Susie, which i'm not sure i like (i don't hate it, but imagine lots of people do).

i saw a thread about George/Henry combo being mandatory Grin. round here george/harry seems to be the done thing!

Like all of your boys names - probably Adam and Toby a bit more than Rory, but they're all nice.

Girls names I like Imogen and Martha. Suzannah is ok. Esther is a bit "old lady" for me.

Middle names great.

MelinaM · 14/04/2011 14:58

Rory's a lovely name for a little chap! I was going to suggest James, but not sure how popular that is, plus you'd probably get Jim/Jimmy, James is such a lovely name to begin with, so why, oh why!!!

Martha is so lovely ...Martha Grace ...George and MarthaSmile

cumbria81 · 14/04/2011 15:22

Rory - great name!
Adam - nice
Toby - too wet

All possibly with benjamin as a middle name - nice

For girls we like:

Susannah - dislike
Imogen - lovely
Esther - not my bag
Martha - quite nice

Bumpsadaisie · 14/04/2011 15:26

I would go for Rory and Esther!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 14/04/2011 15:31

For Susannah you can use the nn Suki/Suky which I like a lot.

Lots of Imogens here - but I like it
I love Esther (nn Etty?) was my Great Grandmother's name
Martha is lovely, too, though like Imogen round here in terms of popularity.

I really like Rory - DH vetoed
Toby - very nearly went with this for DS2 (Tobias in full)
Never really been a fan of Adam, either - though it's a perfectly nice name.

Personally form the other names people have suggested, I think 'Seth' is an 'of the moment' name. We're getting a few more here, now.

What about Patrick?

FebreezeYourJeans · 14/04/2011 15:32

I used to like Rory but can now only think of it as ROAR-Y the Racing car, and it's lost it's appeal.

Adam's Ok and not overly popular.
Seth is divine. (although becomes Seff in S. London)

I don't like Susannah, sounds a bit smug, but I do like all your other girls names.

BikeRunSki · 14/04/2011 15:34

I know a few 2 year old Rories (rural north too) and it always seems like a nickname, but is actually the full name. Seems like Tommy, Sammy, Billy or something, but there is no "long" version of it.

I thought I might know you from your OP, but you can't be because there is a baby Imogen nearly next door to the person I am thinking of.

Anyway, Adam and Imogen

pilates · 14/04/2011 16:54

Rory and Imogen are my favourites

suspiria · 14/04/2011 17:20

I like Imogen,Esther and Martha.

I like Rory, but prefer Tobias to Toby.

suspiria · 14/04/2011 17:23

I also like Seth, it's my favourite from your boys list

latrucha · 14/04/2011 17:24

All great Smile

Insomnia11 · 14/04/2011 17:25

Esther makes me think of Esther Rantzen.

Other than that all very nice.

silver28 · 14/04/2011 18:11

Thanks for all your comments. Glad to see I've not been totally slated! The comments are making me lean towards Rory (which is DH's favourite) and Imogen. Though no doubt I'll change my mind 100 times in the coming months!

Bikerunski - you got me worried there (trying to remember what embarrassing things I've posted on mumsnet!) but I'm on the other side of the pennines to you so prob not who you're thinking of?!

smother · 14/04/2011 22:22

Like all your boys' names, favourite is Adam.

Love all your girls' names except Imogen which I really don't like but that's just me. my favourite is Martha. Martha Grace... simply gorgeous!

Hedwig3 · 15/04/2011 15:15

Your boys names are all names that I really like.

Really like Peter too.

silver28 · 15/04/2011 17:27

hedwig, we must have the same taste in boys names then. peter was on that list too but i deleted it, purely because DH has a friend called Peter who's a bit of a prat, though i still wouldn't reul that name out as we don't see him much.

OP posts:
CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 15/04/2011 20:37

One of the problems with Peter is that it's French for fart. Wink

BikeRunSki · 15/04/2011 21:17

Just to confirm Silver, I am a White Rose. And you don;t live next door to an Imogen, so don't worry.
