How popular is Elizabeth / Elisabeth as a first name?

I seem to know quite a few kids with Elizabeth as a middle name. But I've not come across an actual Elizabeth for a long time. A good old timeless classic, is it popular out there?

I love it, have not met a single one under fifty here!

I love it. I only know one - she's 3, I think. It was on my list for DD. Lovely name and so many options for nicknames too.

notanumber · 12/04/2011 17:12

It's great.

I think it is quite popular, but it's popular because it's versatile. So while there are gazillions of Elizabeths registered, most of them go about their day to day lives as Lizzies and Beths and Libbys and Betsys....

I think it's one of those names where you'll be on a hiding to nothing if you want her always to be called her full name. Something about the name Elizabeth just gets folk itching to shorten it uninvited.

I think it's classic without be over popular. I don't know any little Elizabeths but I love the name!

The only one I know is in my DD's class but everyone calls her Lizzie.

I think it's well-liked but not currently over-used, which makes it perfect.

We have an Elisabeth, and we know a young Lizzie, and there's a Libby in the same year at school.

randomimposter · 13/04/2011 09:00

No, don't know any. Love the "s" spelling personally. Lots of lovely options for NN and variation too.

LiquoriceLila · 13/04/2011 09:05

I know two, one is 4 and the other is 6. Not a fan myself mainly because alll the nicknames are awful. But it has a lot of fans on MN so I'm sure you'll get a good response

labtest · 13/04/2011 10:50

My 4 year old is officially Elizabeth but goes by Beth.

Islandgirllk · 13/04/2011 22:14

I have an Elisabeth - 6 months old and we have called her Bessie or Bess from early on. She is also called Elisabeth. And everyone seems to call her whatever they fancy at the time - we don't mind a bit.

I'm so pleased with the name and so many people say what a beautiful name.

I know one other Elizabeth - aged 2 and a couple of grown up Liz's.

I have never met a Bess though!
