Statistics on ALL baby names

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know how to lay hands on the full statistics for baby names registered in 2009 or 2010? I know the top 100 is easy enough to find, but I've heard there should be a full list on the ONS Statistics site and I simply can't find it. Any pointers much appreciated!

2010 doesn't get published until later in the year, possibly July I think?

What Porkchopster said, but you have to open the spreadsheet and tab along to table 6 to get the full list of all names.

Can't believe this - looked at the ONS site (that PorkChopSter recommended) & Excel file loads and only now found out that the Excel file contains several worksheets! The last one actually includes all names. Doh!

Interesting - there were over 4527 different boys names used in 2009 (the list stops at the names used three times) and 5556 different girls names!!

Why do so many of us use the same top 10 or 100 ones....?

So the lists don't seem to list EVERY name, only those used at least 3 times in that year.

Yes, I think it's a data protection thing, as in all the kids of whom there are only 1 or 2 are more easily identifiable or something...

I can understand, but it's a shame as I bet there's some good names only used for 1 or 2 and I need all the help I can get!

And does anyone know whether these names are only 'first' names or do the lists include middle names as well?

Well this was fun my dd1's name is 23rd dd3 is 253 dd2 is not on there but at 4564 its almost there (but spelt with a u hers is without) ds is 473

Considering we wanted to avoid top 10 names and dd1's name was not on the top 100 when we named her I think we have done fairly good..

I am surprised at some spellings (like Wiktoria/Freyja) is it some customn i dont know?

Was there really 109 children named Princess???
and 10 named Baby

How do you say Aqsa? (sounds like I might like it if I knew how)

Wiktoria is Polish I think. Freyja is a Scandi name that we know as Freya.

Yes, some of the 'strange' spellings will be other ways of spelling in other languages. For instance, in scandinavia they like to use j instead of y (e.g. Freja) and K instead of C (e.g. Lukas).

I don't think it includes middle names, but can't be 100% sure...

Think I would pronounce Aqsa as Aksa, but not entirely sure!

Freyja is the Norwegian spelling of Freya and the only adult Freyja I know is Freyja with a J. So it looks right to me. Hard to believe now with so many young freyas, but when I first heard her name I had to ask her to repeat it about three times!

And 'Baby' may be the name given to stillborn babies Sad?

And yes, Freyja is indeed the Scandinavian spelling.

yes tammytoby... that is probably it. I would give a baby a name even if he/she didn't live, but perhaps in other cultures that seem wrong, rather than right...

Naming babies who weren't ever meant to grow up is an individual choice. Lots of people don't, for reasons I can't understand but I do respect, grief is a terrible thing and it affects us each differently.

On a brighter note, Baby is quite a normal name in South America and the Filipines according to other MN threads.

I come from Denmark I have never heard Freyja spelt with yj hence my question. either spelt Freja or Freya so no not Scandinavian but yes possibilly Norwegian I just do not know it.

I remember baby mentioned here as a possible name it had not occured to me there might be a sad reason.

I just spent an hour trawling through that list, instead of doing work. Oh well finding a name is far more important.

And nice to know the names we have picked for our soon to be born little one are so far down the list only 5 girls named the same and 36 boys named the same. Im pretty happy with that.

Some lovely names on there, some real unusal ones aswell, will defo be looking at that one again.
