Will we always find a reason not to like a name?

We?re really struggling to ?love? names and I keep getting put off by people suggesting the girls name I like the best (does that mean it?s common?) - which really annoys me! And I?ve just realised the boys name we like best is husband?s best friend?s cat?s name!

Am I always going to find a reason not to love a name?

We?re not telling anyone the names we like before baby arrives to save any other opinions like ?I knew a bully called that? or ?for some reason I?ve always hated that name!? which have already been said to us when we?ve suggested names!

Is it ok to just like a name?

You really seem to be trying not to like any names, if the mere fact that someone suggests one to you puts you off it. As for the cat, I have known two families over the years who have used up their favourite boys' name on cats and then gone ahead and used them for their sons anyway. In fact I know a teenage boy who still has an ancient cat in the house with the same name as him. People often give their pets perfectly nice, human names and this cat doesn't even live with you (though obviously if the cat is called Tiddles, you should think again).

You're quite right not to consult anyone; the baby will never have a name if you start taking other people's notions into account.

Good luck!

Of course it's OK just to like a name; you will grow to love it as your DC grows into it.

We never told anyone our DD's name 'til she was born purely to avoid other people spoiling it for us. People will always have an opinion but once the baby is here the name you've chosen will just suit them and everyone will forget that they've never liked that name or that they once knew someone with that name who was horrid :)
