Katherine?

Sure there's been many threads on Katherine/ Catherine before but just wondered what everyone thinks. I'm not pg by the way but wanting to conceive dc2 soon. We already have a ds who has a traditional yet fairly under used name (in our area anyway, believe it is just in the top 20 nation wide).

Also which spellings of Katherine/ Katharyn etc?

Katherine is a lovley classic name. I'd stick to that spelling too.

CorrieQueen · 21/03/2011 19:43

Thank you for the input! Love the Katherine spelling too although Catherine is really tempting me too but I lov the nn Kate which doesn't really sit right with the C spelling.

Catherine

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 21/03/2011 19:44

I adore the name Katherine/Catherine. I think I slightly favour the C spelling, but either is beautiful.

pilates · 21/03/2011 20:21

Lovely name that suits all ages

PQR · 21/03/2011 20:22

Beautiful name, prefer the K spelling though.

Ooopsadaisy · 21/03/2011 20:22

Katherine.

Allows for the option of Kate.

NoWayNoHow · 21/03/2011 20:24

Katherine would have been our girls' name if DS had been a DD. I think we would have spelt it the same as my DH's best friend who died (with a "C"), but I personally love it spelled with a "K".

PepsiPopcorn · 21/03/2011 21:10

I like it.

Coldcuppacoffee · 21/03/2011 21:15

Very topical given the royal wedding coming up - although she is a Catherine and a Kate - this is common, Cate is less common.

I wonder if there were more Diana's when Charles and her got married. Or more William's when he was born?

I like "K" names though. It's a lovely decisive sound (IYSWIM)

myredcardigan · 21/03/2011 23:43

I have a Catherine whom we call Kitty. I regret not going for the K spelling just because it looks prettier and obviously it begins with the same initial as Kitty.
However most Kates and Kittys will be Catherine with a C.

myredcardigan · 21/03/2011 23:44

Mind you, my other DD is Elizabeth, NN, Lizzie so she's stuffed on the initial front too!

growing3rdbump · 22/03/2011 09:28

I'm Katherine, but always called Kate. I much prefer this spelling.
There are two girls called Catherine in DD's (age 7) class.

EsmeWatson · 22/03/2011 11:12

I think Catherine with a C is much nicer spelling. Not a big deal at all if nn is not same initial. Most Kates I know are Catherine. It's a lovely name and dd's middle name - regret not keeping for a future first name!

Rannaldini · 22/03/2011 11:16

Catherine
lovely name

EricNorthmansMistress · 22/03/2011 11:19

I'm Katherine, k/a Katherine. I love my name and think the K is prettier than the C.

LaTristesseDurera · 22/03/2011 11:25

I'm a Katharine. A tradional but not commonly used spelling and I love it.

Katiebeau · 22/03/2011 11:51

I'm a Catherine and never ever been known as anything other than Katie or Kate!!

joydivisionovengloves · 22/03/2011 18:55

I prefer Catherine with a C

kat2504 · 22/03/2011 21:34

And I prefer it with a K. But that is because it is my name! I've never been known as anything else, and I hate Kathy. Kate seems to be becoming a name in its own right these days. However you spell it is up to you though, I don't think it really matters, perhaps it depends on your last name and what the initials look like together.

flowers123 · 23/03/2011 16:15

my name is kathryn and I really like it as it has a slightly unusual spelling

KatieWatie · 23/03/2011 17:37

Katherine is a great name, very versatile and works well for all ages.

However I HATED being a "Catherine" because a lot of people where I was brought up had 'lazy' speech and couldn't be bothered to say it properly - I was usually called "Caffwin" or "Caffrin". Awful.

So I changed it to Katie by deed poll!

So yeah, depending on where you live it could be a blessing or a curse, and I much prefer your spelling to the one my parents gave me btw :)

nickelbabyhatcher · 23/03/2011 17:38

my best freind is a Katherine, and so that's the spelling that's correct to me.

it's such a gorgeous name.

KatieWatie · 23/03/2011 17:46

By the way, seeing all these posts about which is the "prettier" spelling reminds me of a scene in Anne of Green Gables (showing my age now) where Anne tells that mean old teacher she had that she should spell her name (Catherine) with a K because it's much prettier.

I happen to agree with her, but that scene caused me no end of self esteem issues at the time because I'm a Catherine :)

kat2504 · 23/03/2011 18:06

Oh I love Anne of Green Gables! I was very pleased that she endorsed the way I spell my name at the time! But really I don't think it matters. Whatever way, it's still a lovely traditional name that works great for an adult as well as having nice nicknames for a little girl too. I have friends who are Kathryn and Catherine. I've always thought Katharine looks a bit more upper-class, too posh perhaps.
