How soon is too soon?

How far into the pregnancy do you tend to start thinking of names? I am only 12 weeks and find myself daydreaming, thinking of possible names. I know, I know, far too early Blush

But some suggestions?

I kind of like classic names, not chavvy dare I say it, but not too old fashioned either.

So far I have this list:

Olivia
Ruby
Chloe
Emily
Amelia
Sophia
Sophie
Daisy
Katie
Sienna
Amber
Rosie
Eloise
Libby

Oliver
Jack
Daniel
James
Samuel
Ethan
Lucas
Jacob
Mason
Toby
Benjamin
Aiden

We have a bit of a tricky surname too, a vegetable, so colours are out like Scarlett. I know amber is in there, I might be able to get away with that one!

I have a son called James and never once has he been called Jamie. People tend to call your children by names or nicknames that you do, so just set the pace at the beginning.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 21/03/2011 17:23

I tend to kind of associate names with other people I have come across IYKWIM. So I tend to associate Jim/Jimmy with an older man, but still do like James as a name. Nicknacks, yes I suppose you are right. We never really had to worry about that with DD as Ellie doesn't really get shortened to anything else.

Thanks for that link :) I'm not too keen on Xander, but do like Alex.

Spidookly, quite like Helena, but may clash a little with Ellie. Would you say Hel-en-a or Hel-ay-na?

Never too early.
I'm 9 weeks pregnant. We have a 3 year old DD. We decided on a girls name when I was about 6 months last time. Boys name I had almost immediately but DH didn't like it. I spent 9 months trying to find an alternative that I liked and failed. I've spent the following 3 (almost 4) years trying to find an alternative boys name, or trying to convinced DH that my choice is right... no luck on either front.

I'm currently having a nightmare trying to find a girls name that is as unusual but meaningful as DD's.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 21/03/2011 17:29

Bilblio - I spent my whole pregnancy with DD convinced I was having a boy. Couldn't think of any girls names at all. DH and I couldn't agree on any boys names. It was a nightmare. It was only at about 38 weeks we thought we better sit down and think of a girls name just in case. God job we did and good job she is a girl because I don't like the boys name we would have chosen now.

What is the boys name you like?

I was also convinced DD was a boy which made it even worse that the one name I had stuck in my head DH didn't like. The boy's name is Seth. I'm hoping 4 years of pestering will have weakened his resolve this time :o

Actually he did agree last time, I was knackered, the MW's were talking about interventions and they gave me a deadline of midday. DH said if I gave birth by then and it was a boy I could have Seth.
He's decided that deal doesn't apply anymore.

bilblio · 21/03/2011 17:57

Oh and my nephew and friends son are both called Ethan James, it seems to be a very popular pairing... and very confusing for us.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 21/03/2011 17:58

Oh I like Seth. What is your DD called? If you want to say on here, that is :)

I'll be a bit obscure to make her less searchable. :) She'd named after one of the Isles of Scilly, the one the starts with B.

CorrieQueen · 21/03/2011 19:29

I love all the names on your lists (with the exception of Ruby and Amber which both don't appeal to me and have really been done to death over recent years).

I'm not pg yet but we are thinking of trying for baby number 2 this year or next. Already we are thinking of names!

I love Toby for a boy and from your list my fave has to be Katie.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 21/03/2011 19:36

Ruby and Amber are my least favourites on the list. I think I definitely love Ethan James or Emelia Rose.

DH came home and doesn't like any except Chloe.

And he can't think of any to add. Useful. He just keeps saying "we have ages yet" Well yes, I know that but just indulge me fgs! Grin

I quite like Alec as NN for Alexander. What would you shorten Emelia to? Milly?

I'm constantly thinking of names and have been bugging DH since we started trying a very frustrating 15 mths ago!

I quite like Ursula now I've seen UrsulaBuffay!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 21/03/2011 20:58

I'm not sure I would shorten Emelia. I don't shorten DD's name. Perhaphs Emmy?

Ruthie, it took us a year to conceive this one. I have a very colourful gynaecological history and we found out about this one just as my referral came for fertility treatment. The law of sod!

Loving your lists am 12.5 weeks too so am eagerly browsing for names. Loads of great ones on 6our list. Girls I like Sophie and eloise the best pretty and classic and no too popular that she will be one of 5! Somebody on one of the threads mentioned Romily which I think is lovely :)

Again like most of your boys names. Lucas is fave but I have one!

Ethan also great but it will be double E again! Samuel and Jacob also nice classic but not too popular.

Bottleofbeer · 22/03/2011 16:38

Olivia is actually number one in the name chart now. I have one. Oddly though she is the only one in her year. She gets Liv/Livvy way more than her full title though.
