As with a previous thread started by rubybambini, I'd be really interested to know what you think of when you hear the following names - so I'm interested in what attributes you associate with the name rather than whether you like or dislike them. Really struggling this time around

I'm having my 3rd baby (a boy), I have one boy (Jasper, 2) and one girl (Madeleine, 5) and I think these names go quite nicely with the others. Oh, and middle name will be Francis - a family name.

Here goes...

Leo
Laurie (Laurence on birth cert)
Sam (Samuel on birth cert)
Kit (Christopher on birth cert)

Laurence is the female version of Laurent, just like Florence is to Florent. I'd assume she was a girl.

Sam - a bit common/dull

Kit/Christopher - lovely.

Margles · 21/03/2011 15:22

We don't usually hear the name Laurent in the UK. My father was a Laurence - sometimes shortened to Laurie/Larry. I don't think anyone ever thought that he was a girl!

PepsiPopcorn · 21/03/2011 15:24

I like all the full names :) My favourite nickname of those is Sam.

TheEffinOasis · 21/03/2011 16:14

I couldn't bear it if Laurence got shortened to 'Larry' - puts me off it a bit - but the main intention with that one is that we would use 'Laurie', which I love.

Plus - do you think of Leo as a full name, or a shortened form of another name?

meditrina · 21/03/2011 18:49

Leo - the lion, or one of Tony Blair's children

Laurie (Laurence on BC) - lovely, and well established as a boys' name - a third century Italian saint, a 7th century English saint and it's co-existed with the French female variant for centuries (bit like "Jean")

Sam (Samuel on BC) - like it. No strong associations.

Kit (Christopher on BC) - lovely: vaguely reminiscent of the Masquerade man.

TheEffinOasis · 21/03/2011 18:59

Meditrina - who/what is the Masquerade Man?

MuffinMouse · 21/03/2011 19:00

Just to warn you - although Laurie is lovely, it seems to be a unisex name in some parts (although spelled differently) and we have a 6 year old girl in our (very) extended family with it...

Personally I'd go with Leo, def a name in its own right. (The others are a bit ordinary).

TheEffinOasis · 21/03/2011 19:06

Leo is my favourite at the moment - I think it's a strong name. Kit (Christopher) is a recent addition to the list and is growing on me...

Laurie/Laurence I do like a lot, but have a strong feeling that my DP will not be liking it one little bit!

Sam was top of my list for a long time, but has moved down as the weeks have worn (and I do mean worn!) on.

Kit Williams author of "Masquerade" - you probably had to be a child of the 70s for this to mean much to you! I think it's a nice association.

BelligerentGhoul · 21/03/2011 21:15

Leo - not terribly fond of this and it makes me think of mad curly hair for some reason, sorry.

Laurie (Laurence on birth cert) LOVE this - dd1 would have been it if a boy. I think it is a name for a clever but fun-loving chap who is good at art and likes travel - but I may have been reading too much LM Alcott! :)

Sam (Samuel on birth cert) - Sams tend to be loveable rogues ime.

Kit (Christopher on birth cert) - I like this. Strong, sporty but musical too is the image I get - no idea why.

FoofffyShmoofffer · 21/03/2011 21:23

Leo - I think Lion (for some reason) not a bad association though. A nice name in it's own right.
Laurie (Laurence on birth cert)- I LOVE this name. Smart, funny, intelligent.
Sam (Samuel on birth cert)- feels done to death.
Kit (Christopher on birth cert)- Sheesh I don't know. Can't say either way.

Greenwing · 21/03/2011 23:40

I think Leo and Kit go best with your other DCs names. Kit (Christopher) is my favourite.

I like Laurie myself but there is a risk of him being called the (awful) nn Larry from others outside family and, much as I loved the character Laurie in 'Little Women' when I was a girl, the name does sound a bit weak (slightly Timothy?)

Also Sam is far, far more common (frequent) than Jasper so doesn't 'go' IMO

TheEffinOasis · 22/03/2011 12:04

Greenwing we think much alike!

Ghoul try mad-curly-very-likely-to-be-ginger-hair - just to complete the mental image for you! Grin

I would be so unhappy if Laurence got shortened to Larry, so much so that I'm not sure I can risk it!

Leo and Kit/Christopher are definitely at the top of my list - now just have to convince DP. He is keeping remarkably tight-lipped about the whole thing. I have a horrible feeling he has some nasty football-related suggestion to throw into the mix when I am vulnerable and knackered just after giving birth...

Leo - A tall man with curly blonde hair and Scandinavian features. Wears cotton trousers with elasticated waist. Hairy feet.

Laurie (Laurence on birth cert) - Susan Dey's character in The Partridge Family. Or a little boy with floppy brown hair and dark eyes who likes dinosaurs.

Sam (Samuel on birth cert) - A very middle-class teenager with a whiney voice. Likes 'rugger'. A bit mysogonistic.

Kit (Christopher on birth cert) - an elderly retired company director. A bit of a ladies man in his time, with a twinkle in his eye.

TheEffinOasis · 22/03/2011 12:14

Hairy feet! Oh no!! Can't be doing with feet, hairy or otherwise... Grin

Like Leo (Leopold) and Kit (Christopher).

Laurence looks feminine, I'd spell it Lawrence. Not keen on Larry though.

Sam (Samuel) is ok but quite common.

rubybambini · 22/03/2011 17:05

@theeffinoasis - thank you! Hope you get some useful associations. Here's mine...

Leo - confident, artistic (I know two who are graphic designers)
Laurie (Laurence on birth cert) - florist (I know one...), but more generally: softly spoken, might grow up to be a writer, feminine
Sam (Samuel on birth cert) - strong, solid (also DP's first name)
Kit (Christopher) - explorer, adventurer, creative. I have no idea why. This is one we're still considering too

Best of luck =)

TheEffinOasis · 22/03/2011 18:24

Thanks ruby - I admit Kit was added to my list as a result of being on yours! Especially once I discovered it was a shortened form of Christopher. I am growing to like it a lot. Although I think Leo is still topping my list...

It's really nice to know what a name conjures up for people, rather than if they just like/dislike.
