Rosey3 · 11/03/2011 00:40

Here's the shortlist of baby names I'm considering that I generated with Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder. Let me know what you think.

Boys
Avery
Caspar
Dylan
Finlay
Loki
Mungo
Nelson
Winston

Okay so Winston and Nelson are a no but DH likes them so thought I'd see what people think.

Girls
Beatrix
Cecilia
Isobel
Rosa
Rose
Sofia

Beatrix is my favourite from the girls list. Mungo stands out to me but not sure I'd be brave enough!

lilyberry · 11/03/2011 08:34

I think Winston and Nelson are probably the best choices from that list. Mungo sounds too close to (the offensive term) 'mong', which I'd suspect will still be around for a while.

All the girls' names are lovely.

Bettyspencer · 11/03/2011 08:36

I love Rose and Rosa out of your girls' names.

Edmundo · 11/03/2011 08:44

Caspar, Finlay, Beatrix & Rosa.

diddl · 11/03/2011 09:05

Caspar
Dylan
Isobel
Sofia.

Prefer Cecily or Celia to Cecilia.

fifi25 · 11/03/2011 09:35

Dylan and Isobel for me

pilates · 11/03/2011 09:44

I like your girls names but not the boys.

Greenwing · 11/03/2011 19:05

The girls' names are so very different in style! I think all the girls' names are lovely but none of the boys'.

Avery - OK if you like surnames as first names. Sounds like ?aviary? and too like popular girl's name Ava.

Caspar - One of the three Wise Men in the Nativity Play. Also sounds like Casper the friendly ghost.

Dylan - OK if you have a Welsh connection.

Finlay - Fine, preferably if you are Scottish.

Loki - IMO I would definitely cross this off the list - a Norse shape-shifter god which sounds like 'low-key'.

Mungo - sorry, it sounds odd, like an insult or a disease.

Nelson - Don't like surnames, unless your hero is Nelson Mandela (or Sir Horatio!).

Winston - Churchill is too famous and it also makes me think of a character in the Lenny Henry show.

Finlay is the best, some of them are too odd for most children to be comfortable with IMHO.

Thanks for your replies.

My family have said they hope I have a girl because the boys names are awful!

Oh and I was born in Wales. I have nothing to do with Scotland though Greenwing, someone Scottish told me it was Finlay with a D which was Scottish.

My Grandma's name was Rose so all of the girls names would have Rose as the middle name (my middle name as well) would love to use Rose as a first name but not sure if it is too soon after my Grandma's death and would upset some of my family in a nice and bad way if you know what I mean?

Anyway thanks for opinions I'm sure my mind will change a thousand times over until the babe comes. Having trouble with boys names - I want something different so any suggestions would be great.

Dylan -- a bit early 90s to me
Finlay -- very 'now'

Mungo -- Blazing Saddles
Nelson -- like, sounds very 'Venezuelan baseball player' to me
Winston -- like; I like Wilson too but I'm in a minority on Baby Names I think

Girls

Cecilia -- love
Isobel -- too popular but nice
Rosa -- like much more than Rose
Rose -- see Rosa; I like Rosalie though

Avery is a bit girly I think.

Like Dylan and Nelson. After Bob and Mandela. Met a baby at Toddler group the other day called Nelson. Just seemed really odd on a baby, but after thinking it through, I really like it as a name.

Finlay's nice but getting more popular. Still like it. (My ds1's name is no.1 so can't really say it's a bit thing!)

Loki and Mungo just too weird unless you're a really uber cool family and can pull it off, musicians or artists or something.

Caspar - nah

Girls, I like Cecilia and Rosa and Sofia

Beatrix - I just think it's hard to say, Beatrice is easier. And a bit pretentious.

Rose and Isobel are a bit too girly in my book, definitely flicky hair types who are rather annoying.

3nearly4 · 11/03/2011 20:12

I adore Finlay and Caspar (I have a Finlay myself)

I love Beatrix from the girls.

RedFlagHag · 11/03/2011 20:16

I adore Nelson for a boy, and Rose/Rosa or Beatrix for a girl.

I think of Avery as an olde style New England or New York old money name for a boy -- Avery Dulles life and times

BelligerentGhoul · 11/03/2011 21:55

Only like Dylan in your boys' list.

Love Isobel.

cece · 11/03/2011 21:57

Dylan is OK, not keen on any of the other boys names.

Like Rose from your girls list. Isobel also nice but loads of them about.
