Lyra. I really like this name - sounds pretty. Is this a current name?

foundwanting · 05/03/2011 23:06

Isn't it the name of the girl in Northern Lights/The Golden Compass?

BooBearBoo · 05/03/2011 23:08

Isn't it from Philip Pullman's books?

BooBearBoo · 05/03/2011 23:08

saltyseadog · 05/03/2011 23:14

Yes - deffo from Philip Pullman's books.

mummydarlingsausage · 05/03/2011 23:15

I think the origin is greek which would explain why i like it ( i love greek names!)

It is very pretty. I've only read the first book (DS preferred to read the others by himself) but she was a very positive character I think.

saltyseadog · 05/03/2011 23:18

Apparently it is the latin word for lyre. I like very much.

birdofthenorth · 06/03/2011 00:01

I feel I ought like this but it always reminds me of Lyrca!!

Near me there were Lilies, then Lilas, then Lyras so I see it in that "family" of names.

Also comes out "Lywa" for kids who struggle with Rs bur then heaps of simple names fall into that camp.

Will be interesting to see if Lyra rockets up the name charts now!

DesertOrchid · 06/03/2011 09:12

Great choice for them I thought - he's a musician, she's got a literary ancestor and has written books herself - it means lyre in Latin and is the main character in one of the most significant children's books of recent times. And it's pretty.

NinkyNonker · 06/03/2011 09:22

I quite liked it when pregnant.

EmmaBGoode · 06/03/2011 13:08

Very, very nice. And suits them as a family.

IngridBergmann · 06/03/2011 13:29

I don't like it - it always sounded pretentious to me, but it's better than a lot of names even so.

it sounds too much like 'liar' for me. And it makes me think of that awful actress in the Golden Compass.

Sorry.

LadyGoneGaga · 06/03/2011 14:34

I love it but we've already got a Will and it would be a Northern Lights overload to have both!

Used to be my handle on another site.

Lyra Cullum! Bleurgh!

Lyra Dahl Cullum - no

Not keen on it all myself.

UrsulaBouquet · 06/03/2011 16:23

Not keen, bit dull considering. I'd have liked more of a dahl inspired name, maybe not Matilda etc but somehow similar.

pranma · 06/03/2011 16:23

better than Myra or Kyra methinks :)

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 06/03/2011 16:25

I like it - was on my list as I love the books but when the film came out I was worried it would get really popular. It hasn't but maybe now it will.

Yeah, pranma - Myra is not a great name is it?

southeastastra · 06/03/2011 16:27

brand of pencils - like calling your child staedtler Grin

beijingaling · 06/03/2011 16:38

I like it. I think Lyra Dahl sounds lovely.

Onion1968 · 06/03/2011 18:55

Lyra is not bad but when you say it as Lyra Dahl it sounds like something you would buy from a chemist......
