Will this sound really stupid?

Me and bf are TTC, but we've already chosen one name for each gender ready for when it happens (crazy I know but we couldn't help it).

For nosey people, they are Callum and Katie :) (and they will be the most gorgeous things in the world, as soon fates decides to give them to us)

Now a problem. Sister in law had her baby a couple of days ago, she's called her new little girl Kadie.

Obviously that will make our kids her cousins (when they decide they want to create their lil gene body), but wont having a Katie and a Kadie in the same family sound silly? We think the name Kadie is silly, but not our baby to choose.

I don't feel happy now, I feel like we have to choose a different name, although Katie rolls off ours tongues so easily in conversation, it's hard to change it :(

No-one owns a name (or similar names) so if you like the name Katie then go for it. Would you use a longer version (Katherine) and then use Katie as nickname?

nickelbabe · 05/03/2011 11:44

it's obviously a different name.

besides, you migth have the boy first, so the girl will have a longer length of time inbetween for it not to matter so much.

World of difference between Kadie (wtf? Sounds like someone has a blocked nose) and Katie.

Janoschi · 05/03/2011 11:50

I agree. And Katie is nicer, being one Smile

How about Cadi, the Welsh version of Katie? Pronounced Kaddy.

I don't know pepsi haven't decided, I prefer long names that get shortened, so probably, it would either be Katherine or Kathleen, but not a huge fan of Kathleen tbh.

You're right nickel that could happen, might not bother me so much then lol.

Bucharest I know I know! I thought the name was horrible, about 4 months into pregnancy I gave some more name suggestions and she had gone with Faith, until it popped out and now she's reverted back. Even though we're all still saying Faith because we have for the past 5 months lol.

I don't know jano I want to like a name that I feel goes perfectly paired with Callum, even though chances of actually getting 1 girl and 1 boy are slim lol. I don't 'feel' cadi, it doesn't give that lil smile of excitement :(

Then go with Katie. Katherine is lovely, as is Katerina and loads of other variants. Smile

Randomgal · 05/03/2011 13:14

I'm just scared of it sounding silly if they're in the same room 'Katie, Kadie' lol.. Or getting the names muddled up I suppose! Lmao

I think it is fine to do this if you feel ok with it (eg does it make the name less special to you or might it cause a rift with SIL). I personally would not, but i would not think badly of someone who felt differently.

What about Katherine shortened to kitty initially which is similar to Katie and still gives the option of using Kate or Katie later in life.

Randomgal · 05/03/2011 13:45

Sil doesn't mind. Dont think it bothers her, she got in the first with the similar name lol. I just think it sounds too similar for family members or to others like we copied her or something. I was thinking maybe Katherine and call her Kat, but my bf was very settled with Katie too, dont think he likes Kat too much.

I wouldn't worry - we have 2 Matthews in DH's family who are cousins and that definitely the same name.

mamawhoboreme · 05/03/2011 15:44

I think if she doesn't mind then go for it, but I agree with giving her a longer name and having her be Katie - I love it spelt Catie though, I think it's soften.

Catrin/Caitrin, Caterina, Catherine are pretty, equally spelt with a "K" too

Randomgal · 05/03/2011 16:00

I'll have to show this to my boyfriend when he gets home, see what he thinks about the different spellings. Hopefully we'll find our answer :) thank you!

It would be slightly strange, but not enough to stop you using it. I am a Katy (Louise) and DH calls me Kadi as my old initials used to be KD :)

I'd stop worrying - you're not even pg yet!!
