What do you think?

What 'risk' would that be? A little bit of name joshing? I'd expect a child of mine to be able to deal with that 'risk'.

Thissideofchannel · 06/03/2011 11:49

I agree that Laurence is a feminine version of Laurent, just like Florence is of Florent.

The 'risk' is that a Laurence would be mistaken for a girl/woman. Of course that is not the end of the world and once people know him they will accept his name as it is. But I agree that Lawrence is a much better spelling for a boy/man.

Underachieving · 06/03/2011 13:43

I love Miles/Myles and I love Laurence/Lawrence too.

Does the French thing really matter? Have French men called Michelle felt unable to set foot on British soil for this reason?

pointydog · 06/03/2011 15:46

Oh yes. We never stop laughing at Michel Roux, me and my friends.

pointydog · 06/03/2011 15:47

My dd's surname is a common boy's name and her first name could be a surname. She has often been taken for a boy on registers and in doctors' surgeries. Such a cauchemar.

Thissideofchannel · 06/03/2011 21:23

French men are not called Michelle but Michel - small but important difference imo Smile.

ja9 · 06/03/2011 21:27

Hate Miles sorry.

Like Jonah...

Don't LOVE Laurence, but do love nn that are associated with it - very sweet!

rachel234 · 06/03/2011 21:35

I also know a French female Laurence (pronounced Lor-ANSE), and Laurie/Laura sounds very feminine to my ears. If you must, use Lawrence.

I'm not keen on Miles (plural of mile) so I prefer Jonah from your suggestions.

Jezabelle · 06/03/2011 21:37

Jonah, love it. Lawrence . . .Llewelin bowen. No love for the name. Sorry.

sonniebonnie · 07/03/2011 09:55

Or how about Laurent (the male version of Laurence)?

mathanxiety · 07/03/2011 16:14

Lorenzo is lovely too.

pointydog · 07/03/2011 19:54

Some of you are veering on obsession with the french.

Valinor · 07/03/2011 20:07

Laurence (by a Miles Grin)

Richlinn · 07/03/2011 20:10

Jonah

LadyCLC · 08/03/2011 13:06

I think Miles or Myles is lovely and would have it on my shortlist but to doesnt go with our surname so my vote is with Miles.

FireAndRain · 08/03/2011 14:49

Miles is def my favourite, don't like Laurence at all (but do like Laurie as a short version), or Jonah as it sounds too common along with all the Joe's/Joshua's around - they all sound so similar.

Go with MILES!

babytrekkie · 08/03/2011 15:25

I like Laurence best! Not keen on Miles or Jonah.

evamummy · 08/03/2011 21:31

Laurence is too feminine (perhaps because I know a lovely female Laurence, pronounced Lor-Anse) and I dislike Miles. So Jonah is the best of your suggestions imo.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 08/03/2011 22:08

I had DS3 just over 2 weeks ago (and he is sooooo scrummy!) and we dithered between Laurence and Jonah and one other name (so clearly I think you have good taste in names Grin). Went with Laurence in the end, nn Laurie, and I am thrilled with it - it completely suits him, and we have had lovely, positive reactions from almost everyone. So obviously I would say go with Laurence!
