Neve - would you spell it this way if you don't have an Irish connection?

I think I must be on or watching every thread on 'baby names'!
Anyway, would you spell Neve like this? I believe it is spelt Niamh but other than my dh's Dad being Irish (but he didn't know him as parents were estranged from when he was 6 or 7 and he never saw him again), we don't have any Irish connection. Would it therefore be more appropriate to spell it 'Neve' or 'Nieve'??
One more girl's name for the list!

personally much prefer Niamh, Irish connection or not.

I dislike 'unique' spellings. The name is Niamh. I believe the actress Neve Campbell pronounces her name 'Nev'. And Nieve will be pronounced 'niave'.

I wanted DD to be called niamh, ended up as her middle name. 90% of my family is irish, but i think i would probably have have kept that spelling either way. as long as you don't mind having to correct people all the time! :)

It doesn't matter if you have an Irish connection or not, you should still spell it correctly.

RetroMum1 · 03/03/2011 09:39

My daughters best friend is called Niamh and she has no Irish connection and lives in London. I think it is a fairly common name now and most people know how to spell and pronounce it. I wouldn't use the spelling Neve as I think people are more likely to struggle with pronunciation with it and call her Neveeee.

It's a lovely name though!

awful spelling, really stupid. Makes you look like you can't spell, sorry.

fifi25 · 03/03/2011 11:24

I have a Niamh whos 10, she hates her name as she is constantly asked what her name is or called Nee-am Ny-am or Niamph. I spelt it the Irish way as its an irish name and i have irish roots, My surnames Irish but she has dads. Its probably better if you like the name o spell it as its spoked Smile, Remember its your daughters name not yours and shes got to live with it
