My DH and I have different last names and are thinking of combining the 2 for our baby as a double-barrelled last name. This means that we will all have different last names. For anyone else who has a different name to their partner, does this cause any probs later on in life with red tape, eg at school, passport or doctors etc? or is it just a case of correcting people's assumptions? our baby will be 6 weeks old on Weds so need to register name by then. 11th hour request for your thoughts.. Thank you in advance!

anothernewnappy, I am also expecting DC2, & planning to give them my surname as their middle name (or DP's surname as their middle name if I win the fight this time as per Yama!). My brothers & I all have our dad's surname as our middle name. I'd do the same for your DC2 even though you have now taken on your partner's surname. I think it's nice.

Thanks for sharing, sorry for the hijack :) It's nice to see people doing things their own way

The sir name as middle name thing is very popular in Scotland I believe. My Mum was Scottish and her mn was Glen which was her mother's maiden name. Dispite being a boys' christian name it wasn't wierd at all up there. My nephew has my mum's maiden name as a mn, (Mackinnon). They live in Scotland BTW, (I don't!)

I think it's an excellent solution to your dilema Notanothernewyear. Guess you could also ask DD1 if she would like to change her name to fit in with you and her Dsis? Could both have your maiden name as a mn then??

My kids dads family were from scotland and they used the mothers maiden name as middle name so he is Jamieson-Gardner
