Need therapy! Still unsure at 10 months

Hi all, we rushed a little for a passport but I'm still unsure about our DDs name. We named her April Lily but I'm very anxious that she'll be teased, Ape / April fool etc. I love Lily too but there are 6 already in my older sons year. Other names I love are Gracie, Hope, Tilly, Niamh, Florence & Lottie. I generally call her Baby (like Dirty Dancing!) and Honey Pie etc so she doesn't know her name yet either. This does really upset me as I love her lots and lots and lots but just want the perfect name for her. I don't know what to do and think it has driven me bonkers. Help or suggestions please...

Dont use Niamh, i have a 10yr old ones whos sick of telling people what her name is. I woulnt worry about it, my youngests Connie-Jean, i liked Connie but not the Jean, It has grew on me. I loved Niamh and my daughter hates it and gets teased at school about it Nee-am Niamph etc.

lovenest · 25/02/2011 00:24

Thanks fifi25, I wonder how it would be if it was spelled Neve? Niamh is a v pretty name, I bet all 10 year olds complain about their names!

I like it its just a shame she dislikes it so much. She broke her arm and had to have loads of hospital visits and i think it gets to her when they shout Neeam. Ive gave her the story of Niamh an Oisin to read but she still hates it. I have 3 daughters and its hard choosing names so i sympathise.

fifi25 · 25/02/2011 00:32

I have an Irish surname and roots so wanted to use the Irish spelling Smile

OliveMalay · 25/02/2011 01:23

April Lily is a very nice name :) I don't think there's any more potential for teasing than quite a few other names.

I also like Gracie (if a nickname for Grace), Hope and Florence.

hopnpop · 25/02/2011 07:42

I can sympathise completely (see my post on regrets!). However I really like the name April. Haven't heard it for ages and its quite unusual and very pretty! I know what you mean about not using it at all, but as someone suggested to me, maybe try feeling positive and practice calling her her name out loud might help... I don't think either that its a name that would mean she was teased.

specialsmasher · 25/02/2011 07:48

I really like April.

HettyAmaretti · 25/02/2011 07:54

April Lily is a lovely name. Are you absolutely set on changing it?

BikeRunSki · 25/02/2011 08:09

I really like April Lily. If she is going to be teased, it could be about anything, not just her first name. My name would lend itself very easily to teasing, but I was teased about having curly hair. DH (and in fact DGF) were both given short names to cut down on teasing/nn potential. Both had nn based on other things!

Every other 0-2 year old girl in West Yorkshire seems to be called Niamh/Neve/Nieve though. The others are all called Grace! Hope is lovely, but it is my name for if I ever have a DD. Smile

coraltoes · 25/02/2011 08:45

The names you are thinking of changing it to are no less popular than lilly...you'll feel the same when you hear there are 20 other Grace's etc in playgroup!

April is a pretty name. Remember people hardly ever use their middle names.

greenzebra · 25/02/2011 09:01

I think its a lovely name, keep it. I dont think they will tease her.

I think April Lily is an absolutely gorgeous name. I only wish I'd had the foresight to aim for an April baby so I could have used April for my DD Smile

aliceelinsmum · 25/02/2011 10:23

I think April is lovely

BarbieLovesKen · 25/02/2011 10:31

April Lily is the nicest by a long shot. Its really gorgeous (and I dont know any Aprils)

UrsulaBuffay · 25/02/2011 10:41

April is beautiful and underused.

To be honest I wouldn't have put it with Lily because of the double L thing, but it is a lovely name. You could insert a second middle name if you like? My DD has 3 names, it's not unusual. April Florence Lily for example?

Sure she may get some teasing around April fool's day, but as others have said you can't predict and kids will find something to tease about if they're that way out!

lovenest · 25/02/2011 10:43

Thanks everyone, that's given me something to think about over the weekend! I do love name April but am just worried about the Ape bit. Unless I go for Tilly-April or Hope-April, use both as the first name if that makes sense. I quite like Tilly Prilly! There is an April working in our local Tesco so I might go and ask her how it is being an April!!! She will think I am nuts!

I knew an April and never heard anyone mention the ape thing, it had not even occured to me til i read your post. Its a nice name i think

I never heard of the Ape problem either. A girl I knew as a kid was called Prilly in school, but not often. Mostly April is kept as April, I think.

I'd really not change - April Lily is a lovely name.

Smile
HettyAmaretti · 25/02/2011 15:51

I've never heard of the Ape thing either. It's not a name that easily lends it's self to teasing.

April Lilly is so, so much nicer than Tilly-April or Hope-April.

issy123 · 27/02/2011 08:50

Its so lovley she will not be teased you are being paranoid, its really sweet. Kate Winslet plays April in the film Revoluntionary Road very glamarous in it.

ThisFeelsWeird · 27/02/2011 16:02

The "ape" thing had never ocurred to me and I'm sure it wouldn't to most people. Goodness, you could surely make funny words of all our names if you gave it enough thought.

I think you have chosen a beautiful name for your daughter, quite original really, everyone will remember her the next time they meet her. Unlike the sea of Ellas/Ellies/Evies/Avas/Bellas/Isabellas et al which, to my shame, I cannot tell apart until I have known them for quite a long time. Their names just don't stick but April - I would remember an April. It's very pretty.

Hope you decide to stick with April and learn to love it again Smile

eurycantha · 27/02/2011 16:47

I know two older aprils they have always been called April and Ive never heard their names shortened its a lovely name,As This feels weird says children can make a nickname from any name.

muminthemiddle · 27/02/2011 23:32

I think you should try and stop stressing about it. a name is just that a name. If you like a person then I seriously doubt that anyone really thinks "oh April is such a great friend but oh I think I would like her even more if her name was Gracie!!!"

What you are feeling is common but not worth stressing over and if you do change her name then you would probably regret that decision at some point too!
