Short for Michelle.

I've seen it offered as a nn for Sheila and Celia in a baby book.

I was just saying to my mum how much I love this name - I was on the phone to her, but I know she gave me a Hmm face. It's got such a pretty sound, I love the literary connection and I know a very, very lovely woman named Shelley which all goes in its favour.

I think the 'problem' with it, if it is a problem at all, is that it seems a very dated name - a very popular name in the early 70s and I don't know if it's due a revival yet. Having said that, there's a 3 year old Kelly at DD's nursery and, that's unusual among the throngs of Millies and Olivias.

I still love it though.

I know a Shelley which is not short for anything, but she is in her late 30s. I think people would think it is a bit dated but it is pretty.

Stac2011 · 23/02/2011 06:38

i know a few shelley's not short for anything all late 70's early 80's babies think the closest i have heard is shelby. I much prefer shelleySmile

sunshineleah · 23/02/2011 10:06

I am a Shelley! I love it, I like that it is quite an unusual name - wasn't aware it was considered dated though!

BTW it's not short for anything, and I am still in my early(ish) 20's Wink

BuntyPenfold · 23/02/2011 10:06

Shelley is sweet, but I do know one often called Shirley by mistake.

OliveMalay · 23/02/2011 11:02

Not keen, sorry.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 23/02/2011 11:09

Another one not keen. I know or at least knew several Shelley's. they'd all be mid to late 40s now.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 23/02/2011 13:06

sunshineleah - When I say dated, I mean in the same way that Claire/Clare is (very popular when I was growing up as was Sarah/Emma)- generally, you could pinpoint when most were born. Not dated in a bad way (trying to dig herself out of a hole...).

5DollarShake · 23/02/2011 13:21

My oldest friend is a late-30s Shelley - not short for anything.

May be a tad too soon for a revival, but would likely be the only one in the class!

ValiumSandwich · 23/02/2011 13:23

Not sure. I like shelby in a kind of mustang way. If you liek that unisex vibe.

Shelly is very 1968. I think of the Beetles singing meeeeeeeeeeee shell, and all the pregnant mums thinking, ooooh french, I like it. every michelle I've ever met was born in about 1968-1970

Inertia · 23/02/2011 13:53

I always think Shelly Limestone, sorry.

thesoundsofnature · 23/02/2011 15:14

blonde, 70s, tanned, tennis skirt, swinging ponytail. I have no idea why I think this.
Bit Margo Leadbetter.

weimy · 23/02/2011 16:50

I was called shelly as a nn and hated it, because of the garbage pail kids people called me smelly shelly! Blush And I didn't honest!!!!!

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 23/02/2011 20:54

I think of Shelley Winters and she was awesome.

I like it as a name but wouldn't give a DD it. But I would always want to be friends with someone with that name. Smile

Rhubarbgarden · 23/02/2011 21:24

I knew a horse called Shelley many years ago. I thought it was a stupid name for a horse. Quite nice on a little girl though.

Underachieving · 24/02/2011 00:50

I honestly do not like it at all.

IHeartKingThistle · 24/02/2011 01:02

Don't like it, sorry.

Tortington · 24/02/2011 02:16
