Think we have a shortlist - opinions needed

Right been trying to get a name shortlist for months now and think we have finally agreed on one.

What do people think of them, I can't decide if they go with our surname and other children's names.

The 3 we have now all have names ending in the 'un' sound although not deliberate.

Surname is going to be either Mellor or Burns, not decided which one yet and the 3 other children are Megan - my DD, Brandon - step son and Jaiden - long story but hopefully soon our adopted son.

The names we both like are:

Boys - Lysander, Jonah, Ares
Girls - Alexys, Aisha, Leah, Hera

None of them seem to flow with the other children's names but we don't like any other 'un' sounding names to follow the pattern and other than DD none of the names were chosen by us.

Any thoughts good or bad on the suggestions?

I like Jonah and Leah best.

BelligerentGhoul · 10/02/2011 21:45

I like Aisha. Don't like any of the boys' names, sorry - but would go with Lysander if I had to pick one.

cookielove · 10/02/2011 21:47

I like Jonah, how would your pronounce Ares?

I would think Air-rees

And from the girls Alexys, and Leah.

mybootsaremuddy · 10/02/2011 21:48

Jonah and Leah are the best from your list. Also like Alexis, Alexys just dosent look right to me.

jonah is too doomed.
like leah
Alexia or Alexis better than 'y' spelling imo
like Ares best for boy but worry it would be mispelt arse

onimolap · 10/02/2011 21:55

Lysander - I love this name, but even I would say it would be considered high in the ponciness stakes. Are you OK with that?

Jonah - no

Ares - I like it, but you might want to check out the way he's portrayed in the Percy Jackson books

Alexys - prefer spelt Alexis

Aisha - lovely

Leah - OK

Hera - lovely (but again you might want to check the Percy Jackson portrayal).

QuestionNumber · 10/02/2011 22:20

Jonah or Leah.

HettyAmaretti · 10/02/2011 22:23

Jonah and Leah.

Noah?

MerryMarigold · 10/02/2011 22:29

I like Jonah, and think it goes with the 'un' names 'cos of the 'n' sound in it. Same with Noah. I would get an 'n' in there if you can, even if it is not at the end of the name.

No girl's name is standing out to me, truthfully. Leah is ok. Again, I would find a name with an 'n' to sound good with the rest...Bethan?

I think Lysander and Hera are way too poncey to go with your other kids' names though. Sorry!

MelinaM · 10/02/2011 22:29

Hmm, I'm afraid I don't like any of your boys names, if I really had to choose it would be Lysander. Alexys is the best of your girls list, I'd spell it Alexis thoughSmile Good luck x

Rockmaiden · 10/02/2011 23:11

Ares is pronounced air - ees.

Also we like Alexys spelt with a y as it is the original greek spelling and we really like greek names.

I did think Lysander was quite pouncy myself, and we are certainly not rich enough to pull it off but there is something about it I love.

Also I LOVE the name Bethan but OH hates it sadly.

Anyone think of any other nice greek names in case I have missed any?

Really starting to like Jonah the best but I worry it won't 'go' witht he surname Mellor, a bit too rhyming so would have to use the Burns surname and like I said still debating that also.

don't put 'y' in alexis..v chavvy - I teach and doing that is a def chav feature!! Aisha - only Asian girls in my experience

COCKadoodledooo · 10/02/2011 23:25

Ares is so going to be called "Arse" at school, sorry.

Vicky2011 · 10/02/2011 23:30

I'd say Jonah and Leah too, though I think they both go marginally better with Burns than Mellor.

There is though a cheeky side to me that is drawn to the postmodernism of having a Lysander and a Jaiden in the same family Wink

I'm guessing you have ruled out Alex and Jason as too common? (Personally I love Jason but I do understand that it's a name that was of a time and that time is not now)

steamedqueen · 10/02/2011 23:33

Hermione is a lovely name for a girl and it is Greek. It was on the list for one of my twins but dp din't like it.

I love classical Greek names!

Artemis, Khione, Athena, Thalia, Calypso, Hestia, Persephone, Hebe, Alethea, Castalia, Evadne, Gaia, Maia, Melissa, Selene, Pandora, Thea, Ariadne, Lyssa, Sophia

Jason, Leander, Endymion, Hector, Perseus (Percy, but Jackson), Apollo, Dionysus, Adonis, Orion, Ganymede, Palamon, Alastor, Chiron, Peleus

Rockmaiden · 11/02/2011 09:35

Thanks for the suggestions, it's back to the drawing board I think.

Vicky - I like Alex but partner dosn't and Jason is the name of a close relative.

Lysander is definately off the list, you are right a Jaiden and a Lysander just wouldn't fit lol (although we didn't choose the name Jaiden)

Why is it so hard to choose a name, there's too much choice for someone like me.

BelligerentGhoul · 11/02/2011 16:38

Hermione is lovely. I also like Ariadne, Cassandra and Helen.

BelligerentGhoul · 11/02/2011 16:39

Also Melissa.

LaTristesse · 11/02/2011 16:41

Jonah and Leah for me too...

backtoreality · 11/02/2011 17:04

Have you thought of Nathan for a boy, it has the un ending ? Goes with both surnames.

AllieW · 11/02/2011 17:18

Jonah and Leah, I think.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 11/02/2011 23:12

Not too sure about the boys names but I like Hera for a girl.

Don't worry too much about matching the name with your other kids. This baby is an individual after all, I'm sure he or she wouldn't be so happy to know their older siblings affected their name!
