Any opinions?

I love both the short and long versions and think it's quite pretty and unusual

Marianne is the best name in the world ever. Annie for short is alright if you like that sort of thing.:)

purepurple · 08/02/2011 20:45

I love the name Marianne, and wanted to use it for DD, but I have a cousin called Maryanne adn knew everyone would get it wrong. Marianne is the song that me and DH had for our first dance at our wedding, it's by the goth band Sisters of Mercy. I comprimised and called DD Alice, which is also by the Sisters of Mercy.

lowra · 08/02/2011 20:48

So Long Marianne is also a Leonard Cohen song, and a song both me and my dp love.

So long Marianne best song in the world ever.

QuestionNumber · 08/02/2011 21:07

Lovely, and like Annie too :)

belindarose · 08/02/2011 21:10

Love it. Will have it for DD2 (if I have one). Love Annie too, but can't imagine shortening my Marianne.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 08/02/2011 21:11

i like it. i know one grownup Marianne and she is very cool! but no little uns called that, think its a good bet.

supadupapoopascoopa · 08/02/2011 21:12

I like it too.

Although where I grew up she would be likely to be called MAZ as a teen

autodidact · 08/02/2011 21:14

Must say that while I really do like Annie a lot it doesn't seem to come naturally as a nickname for Marianne. My Marianne is only called Marianne (or Mazza or Mazaroon for a joke).

SecondhandRose · 08/02/2011 21:46

My Mum is Marian but no one ever called her Annie but my name is Anne and i have always been Annie.

supadupapoopascoopa · 08/02/2011 22:24

Call her Marianne and leave it as Marianne for as long as you can. It's such a pretty name that to never use it would be a shame.

Marianne much nicer than Annie, imo.

It will inevitably be shortened as she gets older so make the most of the time you can call her it!

mollymawk · 09/02/2011 00:05

We have a (grown-up) Marianne in our family - lovely name. Not sure shortening to Annie seems very natural (unlike some other names like Matilda where the last bit is the "natural" short form IYSWIM). Seems a shame to shorten it at all though.

Anyway whatever you do her friends will call her Maz or Mal.

SecondhandRose · 09/02/2011 09:03

Rhiannon? That could be Annie?

RamblingRosa · 09/02/2011 09:07

Lovely name. Love the Leonard Cohen song.

glovesoflove · 09/02/2011 09:27

I love it (and Leonard C) but it doesn't go with my surname or DP's very well, otherwise I would have one!
I wouldn't shorten Marianne myself but I do like all the Anne/Anna/Annie/Marie/Maria names as stand alones too.
Also like Anneliese/Annalisa but think there are too many potential spelling issues with those for me.
Marianne is pretty without being too flouncy, and I think it's ageless and classless too.

Hatterbox · 09/02/2011 11:52

I absolutely love Marianne.

It's one of our contenders for #4.

MissClavel · 09/02/2011 11:54

I adore Marianne. I wish I'd used it for dd.

The Leonard Cohen song is indeed the best song ever :)

Marianne is a beautiful name.

Annie is nice, but a little bit run of e mill (no offence intended).

Wy would you want to water down such a beautiful name as Marianne?

bringbackaqualibra · 09/02/2011 12:38

Love both :)

ratspeaker · 09/02/2011 12:54

I know of a Marianne,a grown up, she's never had the name shortened in all her life

Boston in the song More than a feeling mention Marianne

SilkStalkings · 09/02/2011 16:15

Love Marianne, inherently classy since Jane Austen character. I quite like Maggie for short (to counteract the poshnessGrin).

AllieW · 09/02/2011 16:17

Beautiful and unusual.
