Still sad I didn't get to use my favourite name, anyone else?

I keep finding myself daydreaming about having DD3 just so I can call her Tess Rebecca. Would that be such a bad reason to have a 3rd child? Grin

DH hated Tess, and it didn't work with the middle name we had chosen anyway (MIL's name) so DD2 ended up with a name that both me and DH liked. It suits her, and I can't imagine her with another name (Meredith by the way) but I still find myself pining for a baby Tess 7 months later!

I even picked up a book in Waterstones today and actually didn't buy it as the main character was called Tess, and I knew it would make me sad.

DH says it's a dog's name and anyway we're not having any more kids, but if I really want I can buy a dog and call it Tess.

If you are not in agreement wit your husband to have another kid then you should not make it happen. If having a dog will make you happy then you should get one, dont think you should name the dog Tess though cos you might start favouring the dog. Also dont think its wise to have another kid just because of a name.

putthekettleon · 05/02/2011 17:10

obviously I wouldn't really have another kid just for the name, don't worry! Just feeling a bit wistful that's all...

I had Ethne picked for my 3 girls and everyone hated it and put me off. I wont be using it now Sad

SilkStalkings · 05/02/2011 17:29

Yeah, really wanted Maggie short for Marianne but DS2 was born with a winkle. Do like his name though, was the only boy's name we both liked.

mummyneedschocolate · 06/02/2011 09:04

I understand how you feel... my 3DDs would've had completely different names if I'd ignored my DH's opinion & I sometimes imagine them with those names but I still love the names we picked & they suit them very well

UrsulaBuffay · 06/02/2011 12:21

I got my fave name and feel sad that I can't get to choose all over again, as I'd be braver I think. I think as a perfectionist I'd feel like that no matter what!

frankenfanny · 06/02/2011 12:47

OP you might have changed your mind anyway if you were pg as tastes change.. I know this was the case for me. DS2 was going to be Kitty Grace and I never considered any other girls name. When he was born I dreamed of one day having a girl with that name. Eventually we did decide to have another child- found out when pg it was a girl -and suddenly I went off the name completely. After dreaming of it for 5 years! And I don't miss it at all.

Maybe you could write a story about a girl called Tess (one with a happy ending Wink).

frida75 · 06/02/2011 19:17

This thread makes me want to stop faffing around and go for the name I adore for my ds3 due in June! Didn't call ds2 the name, partly because it didn't suit and partly because I wasn't brave enough. Don't want to feel regret for not using it - and I've already got a name for my hypothetical dog of the future! Grin

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 06/02/2011 19:23

Yeah - I've still got so many daughters to name - Tess and Betsy would be my most likely but I'd've loved to have Trilby as a middle name for a girl. DH not keen.

So I'll have to get a cat!

Really, frida - do just go for the name you love. How would you feel never picking it? If you would feel one tiny pang of regret, then that's your answer.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 06/02/2011 19:26

Also, polly, DH really was keen on Tess if DC4 had been a girl - even though it was the name of his dog when he was growing up and his brother's current dog. It didn't put us off. We even gave DC4 the same name as our cat which is a little bit confusing at times, if I'm honest.

cowboylover · 06/02/2011 19:28

putthekettleon: I think your DD's name is really nice and maybe the focus on the name is really for something else?

I am the same now frida, I may never get to use the name I have been dreaming of and already want to name the dog Lilly so thats taken as well Smile

FoxyRevenger · 06/02/2011 20:16

Oh I wanted Tess, but my mum put me off it by saying people would tease her with the whole 'two ton' thing Angry

And I got put off Esther by people.

Next time I'm not saying a thing.

Changeisagoodthing · 06/02/2011 20:18

Get a dog or a rabbit or hamster.

naturalbaby · 06/02/2011 20:27

ds3 has just arrived and i'm still daydreaming about the girl name we picked out. I really wanted Talullah but dh didn't like it so we chose Elodie.

we couldn't find any girl names we liked when i was pregnant before but found out we were having boys, then had a surprise for ds3 so spent ages choosing the perfect girl name. dh threatening to have the snip otherwise i'd probably be one of those mums who keep on popping out babies! so looks like i'll never get to use it. maybe i can persuade one of my sisters to use it one day!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 06/02/2011 21:33

Sorry, OP, I just took it upon myself to rename you. Sorry about that Blush.

muminthemiddle · 06/02/2011 22:41

I have to say I prefer Meredith to Tess if that makes you feel better!

I don't think you can have a name that only one parent likes tbh. Much better to go for a second choice which both parents like rather than a first choice of one parent but which the other dislikes.

I didn't get my first choice but we did use it as dd's middle name. She actually says that she is glad we didin't call her by her middle name. Even though it was more unusual at the time she knows more people with her middle name than her first name, which seemed less unusual at the time. Anyway she is the only one at school with her name and it really suits her.
Why not get a pet and call the pet Tess. Much less hassel than having a baby just to call her Tess.

mathanxiety · 06/02/2011 23:09

Aoife, Niamh and Bridget/ Brigid. I loved Marie Chantal, Alice and Clementine too... and Frida, and Angharad.

Frida -- go for it. It's your baby and you get to decide. Everyone else can like it or lump it.

chipmonkey · 06/02/2011 23:10

I have a few girls names that I loved but have four boys! Upside is I got to use all my favourite boy names.Hmm

putthekettleon · 07/02/2011 08:24

Grin thereisalightanditnevergoesout - Polly is DD1's name, for a moment there I thought OMG do I know you, or have I outed myself?! Hehe

muminthemiddle, thank you, I do love DD2's name and it absolutely suits her, I looked at her the other day and thought there's no way she could be a Tess. She is just Merry.

And don't get me started on boys' names, I still have the odd pang for the Nathaniel James we never had...

Perhaps I should get lots and lots of pets! Or wait tiil the DDs grow up and give me grandchildren and see if I can bulldoze them into choosing my names subtly influence their choice of names for my grandkids Smile

Frida, go for the name you love!

Tess in the book has a terrible time of it, it'd make you sad anyway!

Psammead · 07/02/2011 12:54

I pine for an Alice. Maybe next time.
