Adding my mums name as middle name even though not a fan of the name?!

Right, I would love to name my DD2 due in a few weeks after my wonderful mum :) BUT I'm not sure I like the name Confused and it doesn't go with the name I've choosen for her. My mums name is Shirley (she doesn't like her name either) and I want to call dd Betty with the middle name something along the lines of blossom (kitch I know, but I love kitch!) It's in the family to have 2 middle names, but maybe it's to long or doesn't go?

Does your Mum have a middle name? Or what about her mothers name.

Hassled · 02/02/2011 21:33

All my DCs have middle names which are their grandparents' first names, IYSWIM, except DC4 - the last grandfather (FIL) has a name I can't stand. So DC4's middle name is his great grandfather's name - everyone's happy. Would that work for you?

JojoMags · 02/02/2011 21:34

Does your ma have a middle name you could use instead? Could you look at foreign versions of shirley, or alternatives with the same meaning?

Bluebell99 · 02/02/2011 21:36

If you don't like it and your mum doesn't like it, chances are your baby won't either. Perhaps it might be wise to choose a conventional name as a middle name in case your baby doesn't like the names you have chosen. TBH i can't think of anything worse than being called Betty Blossom Shirley. Is Betty coming back into fashion? How about Elisabeth (couldn't you call her Betty as a nickname?)

starlingsintheslipstream · 02/02/2011 21:41

Does your mum have a maiden name? Sometimes that works - it's nice to retain that link I think as surnames can get lost over time.

DesertOrchid · 02/02/2011 22:41

I'm not convinced by Blossom and I agree with pps that Elizabeth is better...

But I think Elizabeth Shirley is very pretty, so why not do

Elizabeth Shirley ---- Surname and get your more kitsch name in there?

cece · 02/02/2011 22:44

Shirley is certainly more kitsch than Blossom! We used MIL middle name as her first name didn't work with our choice of first name. Luckily it is also my DS middle name too so kept both sides of the family happy. Smile

My 3rd daughters middle name is Jean, how uncool but she was the only one of mine her great nan didnt meet. Its rarely used so i would just do it.

diddl · 03/02/2011 08:25

If you don´t like the name, why would you use it-especially if the person you want to "honour" also doesn´t like it?

GrimmaTheNome · 03/02/2011 08:37

My mum hates her name (and her middle name even more) - she'd have been cross if I'd lumbered DD with either of them.

Maybe you could ask her to help you choose a middle name you both like?

Iklboo · 03/02/2011 08:46

Might sound weird, but could you use an associated name - like Valentine (as in Shirley Valentine)? Betty Blossom Valentine Surname?

brimfull · 03/02/2011 08:48

grandparents name as middle name is trad in out family , or grandmothers maiden name
my mum's middle name is stuart

GandalfyCarawak · 03/02/2011 09:25

Betty Blossom is a child's name imo. Elizabeth Shirley is lovely!

fifi25 I love the name Jean!

Hedwig3 · 03/02/2011 09:54

Betty Shirley Blossom - fab, I like Shirley! Smile

Eglu · 03/02/2011 09:57

I would also like to honour my MUm in this way if we had a girl.

I don't like my Mums name and neither does she. Will your Mum really appreciate it if she doesn't like her name. Could you use your Mums maiden name perhaps?

fifi25 · 03/02/2011 11:14

Gandal - Its starting to grow on me now, her 1st names Connie so it goes quite well with Jean

mannicmummyhavinaiccy · 03/02/2011 19:52

Elizabeth is really starting to grow on me, and goes well will dd1 1st name - Tabitha. and use Betty as nn :) couldn't use her maiden name as it is even worse and she has always been teased about it! But maybe her middle name - Marion. Elizabeth is also what she wanted to call me untill my dad vitoed it!
Fifi - I also love Jean, was my Late paternal nan's name, would use it myself, but my mum has been so great (she just traveled up to us to look after dc as I have a chest infection :) ) so would really like to honour her :)
