Cuthbert

Both DH and I love Cuthbert and liked it separately before telling each other - this is the only name that this has happened with.

DH is a fan of the Dark Tower series which I think is the reason that he likes the name.

I've just liked it since I can remember.

Cuthbert nn Bertie

The problem is EVERYONE and ANYONE that we've mentioned it to seems to really dislike it. Some have said that it would be cruel to name a child Cuthbert.

What do you all think - is it that bad?

I'm surprised by how negative reactions are to Cuthbert. I quite like it, and like Bertie or Cully as a nn (btw I know of a Robert nn Bertie, to give you an alternative). I have a Wilfrid, though, which is a name of similar origins that seems to evoke similar reactions. My great uncle was a Cuthbert, known as Cuth and he hated it, and changed to his middle name, James, as soon as he was old enough. Bizarrely he named his own son Cuthbert and the son in turn changed to mn John, so perhaps it's not so easy to live with after all.

Don't like Roland (Roland Rat) much, but Roly and Rollo are OK. Roly difficult if fat - Roly Poly atc.

Cully is a v old insult iirc - like calling somebody an idiot, I think. It's certainly used as such in historical fiction anyway.

Ro is quite nice as a nn for Roland, I guess.

Clearly, it is daft. Makes me think of the firemen from Camberwick Green. Oi Cuthbert, where's Dibble?

Be fair to the boy, give him a fighting chance, give him a better name.

Cuthy dreadful. Cuthbert - public school, wet. Bertie - twee. Cully is weirdly good but not a natural nn for Cuthbert. Roland is slightly better but makes me think rat.

I like it.
