Naomi? (and a couple of other possibilities!)

Hi

We are still musing on girl's names. DH has ruled out Rafaella ('to frilly') and Constance (a fat girl's name').

Just wondering what people think of Naomi? I love the name but only know of older Naomis. Also, all of the Naomi's I know are all Jewish (and/or American). Could we get away with it, given we are not Jewish? Middle name would be Hope.

Already have a DD called Arabel.

Other possibilities at the moment are Beatrice, Honor, Iolanthe and DH likes Liesl.

We are still clearly in the early stages of project babyname!

Wouldn't assume a Naomi was Jewish necessarily. Like it! Goes with Arabel.

Liesl - sounds like Sound of Music.

Iolanthe - nightmare to spell and people also won't know how to pronounce.

Beatrice - quite nice. Definitely second after Naomi.

Honor - don't really like names which are words (ok, spelt differently).

fragglerocks · 28/01/2011 09:45

I love Naomi Hope, I think it's beautiful. I would love to use this but I can't.

Beatrice would be my second favourite (it's on my shortlist!)

EauRouge · 28/01/2011 09:48

Naomi was one of my first choices but DH didn't like it. Beatrice is nice too, Honor is OK, not too keen on the others though.

growing3rdbump · 28/01/2011 09:51

Naomi is beautiful! I would definitely use it for DC3 if I didn't already have daughter with N name which can sometimes sound similar.
Naomi Hope sounds super too.

Bideyin · 28/01/2011 09:54

Naomi spelt backwards is I moan :)

AllieW · 28/01/2011 09:56

My friend's baby girl (5 mths) is called Naomi. I think it's lovely, provided there's not too much emphasis on the o as some people are wont to do (I like the pronunciation where all 3 syllables have roughly equal weight).

zozzle · 28/01/2011 10:13

Lovely!

Helzapoppin · 28/01/2011 10:15

Thanks for the thoughts! Iolanthe sounds like a widdowed aunt from Jeeves and Worcester doesn't it?!

Naomi is a lovely name. I know a number of non-Jewish Naomis. Goes nicely with Arabel too.

Beatrice - like
Honor - like
Iolanthe - like
Liesl - not keen

Or how about

Xanthe
Juliet
Lucia
Celeste
Marina
Estella
Miriam
Abigail
Felicity
Rebecca
Elise
Clementine
Corinne
Elodie
Maya
Natalie
Constance
Emma

PlanetLizard · 28/01/2011 11:11

Iolanthe? No, it's this

ValiumSandwichTime · 28/01/2011 16:58

I love Honor and Naomi

I like that they're less frilly than Rafaella. I like Rafaella, but I wouldn't choose it.. Constance is a bit harsh

Bue · 28/01/2011 19:07

Of course you can get away with it! I know non-Jewish Naomis. It is such a beautiful and underused name.

Ooooh I love Naomi Honor (even though that's not what you're going for!).

onimolap · 28/01/2011 19:13

Naomi: I like it, and don't think you need to be Jewish to use OT names. (Does slightly remind me of Maoam sweeties, though).

Beatrice: OK

Honor: sort of OK

Iolanthe: lovely

Liesl: no - seems like a mixture of Lies and Weasel.

Helzapoppin · 28/01/2011 19:16

Lol @ Lies and Weasel. I'll mention that to DH next time he suggests Liesl!

Like Naomi too. How would you say it? NAY-o-mi or Nay-OH-mee?

pointydug · 28/01/2011 20:11

I like Naomi a lot

BelligerentGhoul · 28/01/2011 22:31

Lovely - but I'm biased. :) And not Jewish.

Don't like Rafaella at all. Not over-fond of Liesl (Is that the name of one of the tribe in The Sound Of Music?)

Do like Constance, Beatrice, Honor and Iolanthe.

pointydug · 29/01/2011 10:43

ghoul, where've you been?

freelancescientist · 29/01/2011 16:45

I've got a Naomi - it is a lovely name, feminine but not too girly. And her older brother is fond of pointing out that it is I moan backwards...She is the only one in the whole school if that helps with the choice?

cece · 29/01/2011 16:56

Naomi is nice but out of your list I love Honor.

peanutbutterkid · 29/01/2011 17:01

My 8yo cousin is Naomi, she is
not Jewish
very creative
Flaming red hair

I don't like Beatrice.
How the Heck do you say Iolanthe?? Confused

peanutbutterkid · 29/01/2011 17:02

What about Raquel? I went to school with one.

PlanetLizard · 29/01/2011 17:18

Eye-oh-lanth-ee

BelligerentGhoul · 29/01/2011 18:43

Hi Pointy - computer was v sick. It's better now.

Thanks for noticing I'd gone - I don't think anybody else did! :)

Helzapoppin · 29/01/2011 19:17

Thanks for the thoughts. When DH and I talked about it last night, we could not agree on how to say Naomi (he thinks with the emphasis on the OH sounds, I think with equal emhpasis).

He really, really likes Hero (?!)
With both like Adelaide, with Ada as a nn.

He says when he hears Honor, he can't think of anyone younger than Joanna Lumley.

My 2 year old wants to call the baby Daisy Doo. At this rate she might get her wish!
