Morgan? for a girl??

I am from the US but live in Cardiff. Names and their uses are different in different parts of the world I suppose. I always said I would name my child Morgan whether a boy or girl. In US, this would be unique but totally fine. My husband (Welsh) tells me that there is no way you can name a girl Morgan in the UK. Thoughts please?

I do tend to think of it as a boys' name (there's a character in an Enid Blyton book with the name plus Morgan Freeman of course), although I'm aware that it can be unisex. However, if I think of it as girly at all I'm afraid Morgana La Feye (or however you spell it) comes to mind, so I don't think it has good connoitations!

My old friend (American) called his daughter Morgan. It suggests "Short squat stocky HORSE" after the American horse breed, too (sigh). Or the impoverished Indiana county (Morgan) half my relatives passed thru.

If you live in the UK, I think you'll get a lot of negative reactions and I personally wouldn't want to deal with it. That said, my grandmother has a Welsh man's name (my grandmother is American-born with Scottish heritage, btw Confused) I recently found a few women born around the same time with the same name, must have been a brief 1920s fashion. So who know, maybe you'll start a trend!?

I know a Morgan who is a woman. It has never struck me as an odd name, though the biggest association for me too is Morgan La Fey.

Morgan is quite a common surname in parts of Wales, too. (I went to a welsh uni with a few). For that reason, i wouldn't use it in Wales.

A friend of mine has a DGS who was originally named Morgan. People kept asking her DD if the baby was a girl. So she gave him a different name instead.

I live in London btw and have met 2 Morgans, both girls...

Morgan is a Welsh surname and a luxury car brand but around here the name is a boy's and rather 'down market'. Negative reaction here - sorry.

My neice is called Morgan. And nobody has asked if she's a boy. It totally suits her as she's quirky and individual but people do shorten it to mo. Which is fine if you like it but I always think of big mo from eastenders!

There is a lovely 8 year old (female) Morgan in my dd's class, so I associate with girls. Nice name.

I know two Morgans, one is approx 13 and the other is 6, both girls. Lovely name.

I'm in Cardiff and of course you can use Morgan as a girls name. I know a few and it's a beautiful name.

I would only advise against it if your surname is Morgan!

Morgan is absolutely NOT a boy's name in my opinion! (i'm half welsh). Always found it most odd to meet male Morgans). Morgan le Fey..

I'm in Scotland and I know 2 Morgans - 1 aged 16, 1 aged 4. Both girls. I think it's a lovely and unusual name.

Wow! Thanks for all of the responses! I didn't expect all that. Turns out after I read all the responses to my DH, he confessed that he is "not mad keen" on the name at all - boy of girl. Hahaha!

Morgan is a surname or a car. Much prefer Megan.

The trouble is that my little brother's middle name is Morgan. When his wife got pregnant, she was going to use the name whether they had a boy of a girl. I insisted that they don't because I had been saying for years that I was going to do that. They settled for Madison but there has always been resentment and hostility. I wish I hadn't done that but I was not quite mature then. Now my Mom and SIL have both asked me if I was going to do what I said and call the baby Morgan!!! Major expectations! Live and learn...

I know 3 Morgans, 2 are welsh, 1 male and 1 female. The other is from as greenwing put it, a rather 'downmarket' area within my city.

I know a boy called Mrogan but I always think of it as a girls name and so I really don't think it suits him as he is quite butch. Boy or girl I don't like it!

I know boys and girls called Morgan.

I prefer it for a girl tbh, a bit too feminie for a boy I think.

However, having said that I am not very keen on it at all as a name.

I love it for a girl and I'm in cardiff ... but then I chose my DS name before I knew he was a boy and would have had it for a girl !

I know a lovely female Morgan in her 30s. It suits her.
