Love it. Don't think it's posh at all. It would be a serious contender for us if it wasn't for the fact a very good friend of mine just had an Imogen before Christmas :)

She's a prison officer by the way, and her DH is a policeman. Their son is called William. Not posh, not trying to be posh - and the name is pretty high in the popularity stakes (not really really high, but high enough not to be posh or niche).

So anyway, I think it's a gorgeous gorgeous name :)

Just realised it might be rude to say about my lovely friend that she's 'not posh'. She's not 'posh' or aspiring to be - she's perfect and lovely :)

I think its really pretty. But I do also think you need to be pretty to pull it off as its very feminine. But if you're lush, then I'm sure your daughter will be gorgeous

we're common as much, i dont think it is posh at all

ive heard it means maiden from the celtic name innogen which derives from inghean. Can also mean innocent.. too many baby name websites have been looked at through this pregnancy

It looks to be from Latin 'imo + gen' but wiki has an interesting article about possible Celtic influences, which I didn't know about. Thanks!

I know a really lovely Ginny (from Virginia) but we used to have a girl on my hockey team called Ginny (from Virginia) and her team chant was 'Virginia, Virginia, sounds like vagina' which has somewhat put me off the name

I don't like Imogen - it sounds quite harsh and unfeminine to my ears. Also won't travel well into other languages.

Love Virginia though.

Not sure what names are 'posh' and whether its a good or bad thing....

I agree rachel, though I think feminine/unfeminine is equally subjective as 'posh' - someone else on the thread has said it's so pretty the girl would have to be very pretty to live up to it - more or less the opposite view to yours!

I know a 7 year old Imogen, known as Immy, she's a lovely little girl. I think it's very feminine and pretty.

It does seem to be one that divides a bit - more positive than negative which is pleasing!

It's all so arbitrary really, isn't it! That's why it's so darned difficult...

oh, it really is, difficult that is, anyway another vote in favour on Imogen, I think it is a gorgeous name, love Immy too, was in top 5 of our list for DD. I don't think it is particulary 'posh' and def does not seem unfeminine to me, just a really pretty name, good in childhood and as a teenager/adult I would think. Go for it!
