Eliza, Louisa or similar....?

Due DC3 in 3 weeks.

We don't know what we're having (we have two boys), and think we'll go with either Louisa or Eliza if we have a girl (unlikely as we have two boys but need to be prepared!), but I can't chose between the two...

Only problem is I don't like nicknames Lou or Elle/Ella - but I'm not sure as parents you have much control over nicknames anyway!

What are your opinions on the two, and can you suggest anything along similar lines?!

Helena(nn Nell) or Anna, but LOVE Eliza too

KangarooCaught · 27/01/2011 10:54

Like both v much, but Louisa gets my vote

justmilkpleasenosugar · 27/01/2011 11:44

What are your DS's called? Might help MN's help??

I have two great friends called Louisa and Eliza...neither have the nn you are concerned about.

Louisa nn is Weeze!!! This is from childhood and has nothing to do with her name at all.
Eliza doesn't have a nn.

Hope that helps? [bsmile]

FaronYoung · 27/01/2011 11:47

Prefer Eliza to Louisa.

How about Ellissa?

MackerelOfFact · 27/01/2011 11:47

I know an Eliza, her nickname is Li.

I knew a Louisa too and I don't think she has a nickname.

rockinhippy · 27/01/2011 11:54

I know a Heloise, which I personally think is much nicer & certainly more memorable

letsblowthistacostand · 27/01/2011 13:01

I have a Louisa, she never gets called Lou.

flower38 · 27/01/2011 14:09

love Eliza. Louisa ok but not as nice as Eliza.

nancythenaughtyfairy · 27/01/2011 16:32

I love both those names!

Lamorna · 27/01/2011 16:45

I love them both! Louisa wins by a short head.

Plonker · 27/01/2011 17:09

Genevieve
Felicity
Francesca
Georgina
Harriet

I like both Eliza (prefer Elizabeth) and Louisa (pn with a soft 's').

Good luck

AllieW · 27/01/2011 17:42

Eliza is more likely to end up as Liza nn-wise, I'd have said (cf Eliza Carthy). I prefer it to Louisa by a long way.

CountessVonKnackerstein · 27/01/2011 17:48

Beware the curse of Louisa! Grin

Spoken by an owner of the name...nobody ever spells it right (how hard can it be!?! I get odd spellings on cards etc like lousea louosea luisa looisa, you name it)

People calling me Louise gets right on my nerves. And I can never get a pen with my name on it Grin

Sorry, just ranting. I like my name and I like not being called Louise, it's just a wee bit different and I like it for that

Celia76 · 27/01/2011 18:58

justmilkpleasenosugar - DS's are Edward & James so pretty traditional and I guess we like girls names along the same theme!!

Thanks for the posts!

Eliza is my favourite. I know of two and neither gets a nn. Louisa is nice too but sppeaking from experience she would get a lifetime of infuriatingly being called Louise. Eloise is a pretty alternative and incorporates parts of both names, but still prefer Eliza.

EsmeWatson · 28/01/2011 04:49

I vote for Eliza - love it but slightly biased as I have one nn Lizzie. Goes perfectly with your DS nams too.

Celia76 · 28/01/2011 08:20

Thanks all. I'm leaning towards Eliza! Elizabeth is a family name and Eliza seems like a nice way of recognising that too!

My Eliza calls herself Lila Hmm
I think it's sweet and can't help calling her it too sometimes.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 30/01/2011 18:01

I am a Louisa. I get called Lou (I'm not keen) and Loulou (I don't mind this too much). My Dad calls me Weasel - which I prefer to everything else.

I like Eliza very much, but how does it sound with your surname? Sometimes, when said out loud it can sound like "'ere lies a..." (depending on accent) and as long as your surname isn't 'Fish' or something, it's probably OK.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 30/01/2011 18:02

Oh, and yes, being a Louisa, you do get called 'Louise' a lot. And it is really irritating.

SilkStalkings · 30/01/2011 19:35

Lisette/Lizette?
I also like the Heloise spelling best, just because it will annoy people who don't speak French ;-)

Umnitsa · 30/01/2011 19:41

Really like Louisa; I think Ilse is along the same lines with a Nordic flavour.

Xanny69 · 30/01/2023 18:33

My name is Louisa and everyone is calling me Lisa. : )
