Why cruel? Does it have a bad meaning? I've not heard it before, where does it come from?

whydobirdssuddenlyappear · 24/01/2011 21:36

It's the name of the Lady of the Lake, isn't it? It's pretty, but you'd need a surname that went with it well.

Ahardmanisgoodtofind · 24/01/2011 21:38

its welsh, it was said to be the name of the lady-in-the lake from the merlin legend (one of them), who he fell madly and eternally in love with.
dp says it sounds like the begining of the song "in the jungle" by the tokens!!

I think most people would struggle to pronounce it without explanation.

Be prepared for a lifetime of explaining and spelling it.

(I would have thought it was pronounced Nim-you.)

SecretNutellaFix · 24/01/2011 21:39

It's pseudo celtic, definitley not Welsh.

Most people would struggle tbh.

Janoschi · 24/01/2011 21:40

I wanted it my ours but DH had a hopeless time pronouncing it. Go for it, it's lovely!

whydobirdssuddenlyappear · 24/01/2011 21:40

Sorry to say, but pretty as it is, I can see where your dp is coming from...

SandStorm · 24/01/2011 21:41

You'll need an accent on that last e if you want it pronounced correctly. I'm with Sidge otherwise on the pronunciation. Either way, it's a bit of a mouthful.

pinkylulu · 24/01/2011 22:08

not nice.

MrsSchadenfreude · 24/01/2011 22:20

So, like Wimaway, but with an N instead of a W?

Mmmm...praps not.

MmeLindt · 24/01/2011 22:22

Do you live in Wales, where the pronunciation would be clear?

It did not make me think of Lion Sleeps Tonight, but now I have it in my head, damn you.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 24/01/2011 22:23

I think you and she will spend a lifetime explaining how to say it and how to spell it - with half the kids calling her Nemo. I'm sure you can think of something else you will love.

readywithwellies · 24/01/2011 23:36

I am welsh, never heard of it if that helps.

No opinion on the actual name other than it is hard to pronounce.

readywithwellies · 24/01/2011 23:36

Agree with Chipping on how it would be said

seeker · 24/01/2011 23:42

If you feel you have to ask, then the answer is yes.

Firawla · 25/01/2011 13:34

I think its pretty
if your unsure but it as middle name?

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 13:34
