HELP with Girls/Boys names....struggling

LadyCLC · 24/01/2011 13:37

I am pregnant with my second child, don't know the sex and strugging with names for both. I want to incorporate Lucie into the girls name as it is my middle name and was originally going to give it as a first name but dont know if its too 'normal', although I am not one for unusual/fashion names, I like tradition and names that stand the test of time, the other first name I like is Claudia, so I am thinking the following for girls:

  1. Claudia Lucie
  2. Lucie Ayva
  3. Lucy Perle

For boys I like Will and would go for William but husband is not keen on William and likes Wilson??? His middle name will be Richard. But my favourite is Tommy (& Thomas is hubbies middles name) BUT my brother-in-law and his wife have a 13 yr old son called Thomas, who gets called either Thomas or Tom, they are close family who live near by so dont know if us calling ours Tommy would be acceptable or not....?? Any suggestions? Sorry to waffle, it is my first time on here and my head is spinning with names!! Thank you

I really like the name Lucy/Lucie, but not sure as it goes well with Claudia. For example Lucy Elizabeth flows better. I'd keep to the original spelling of Ava, it looks far nicer, and Ayva is a bit 'of the moment', where as Ava is a classic, Ava Lucy sounds lovely.

Love the name William, especially the shortened Will! Wilson sounds very American to me, Thomas is a lovey name too, well they don't 'own' the name so if you both like it, use it I say!

Good luck! x

Thank you for your suggestions, I guess we will have to run Tommy by them first and I agree I prefer William shortened to Will.

I cant have Lucy Elizabeth as my mother-in-law in called Elizabeth my husband gave my step daughter Elizabeth as a middle name.

I love Ava/Ayva but am worried it is becoming a bit too popular just now, its such a hard decision!!

Thanks

I'd go for Lucy Ava, or Lucy Pearl (would use spelling Pearl).

I like William, not keen on Wilson though (don't really like surnames as first names).

mathanxiety · 24/01/2011 20:36

I like Lucy Perle (or did you mean Pearl?) best.

Wilson sounds good to me; less boring/stiff than William. Wilson would be more of a Hispanic Caribbean and Venezuelan/Colombian name than American. You could still use Will/ Bill/ Billy etc., as nns.

I would forget about using Thomas except as a mn and you already have Richard (fab name imo) chosen, unless you wanted to give three names....

Greeninkmama · 24/01/2011 20:45

You can't use Thomas if DH has a nephew called that, you just can't. And whatever name you choose, why spell it incorrectly? Lucie is okay, but Ayva and Perle just look wrong.

I think Claudia Lucie is a beautiful name, fwiw. And I love William.

PlanetLizard · 24/01/2011 21:15

I think there's no problem in using the same name as someone else in the family. Thomas is not an unusual name and it just means you have similar tastes :)

MelinaM · 25/01/2011 00:04

^ITA, after all it;s not as if they're the same age, the 13/14 year age gap works out rather well!

juneau · 25/01/2011 11:48

Yeah, I'm with Greeninkmama - you can't use the same name as your nephew. Surely there are enough names around that you don't need to use the same one. And Thomas is soooo popular at the moment. There are five at my son's tiny nursery. Five! And I know of another two belonging to friends of mine. Ditto William - very, very popular right now. Just among friends (not even acquaintances), I can think of six Williams. Not a fan of Wilson.

As for cutsie spellings like Ayva - IMO yuk. Ava is lovely, however. And I don't think I know any little Lucys. It was very popular in the 1970s, but more unusual nowadays.

Wilson makes me think of a ball with a face drawn on. I lost the will to live watching that film. Is it Castaway, the one with Tom Hanks.

I think all your girl suggestions are lovely.

Ok. Ayva and Perle are not cutsie/incorrect spellings they both feature in a very old Baby Name book handed down to me, and my middle name is spelt Lucie.

I prefer Lucy Perle to Lucy Pearl(ever heard of the band Lucy Pearl, brilliant as they are dont want to replicate the name exactly).

If we went for Tommy he would be called Tommy on his birth certificate, not Thomas or Tom like our nephew - guess we will run it by them and see what their opinion is, I know what your saying about picking a same name and not sure how I would feel but just dont really like any other boys names at the moment - hence I am struggling so much!

THanks for all your suggestions/opinions. :)

Claudia Lucy would be my choice. You don't see many Claudias around these days and it's a lovely name.

LadyCLC · 25/01/2011 20:09

Yes I agree I love Claudia and there aren't many and it is not high up on the list of most popular names in recent years, but still lovely all the same. I think it is very classy. thanks :)
