besides Andrea or Amanda, and what are thoughts on Andie in general?

Seeing that I loathe Andie MacDowell, I would say "yuk".

but since you're asking:
Andromeda
Anthea (at a push)
Antonia (also at a push)

I hate the name Andrea (too dreary) and don't like Amanda much either - isn't that usually shortened to Mandy though?

onimolap · 23/01/2011 07:16

Also Alexandra?

CheerfulYank · 23/01/2011 08:04

I was asking because I am trying to convince DH (Andrew) that we should have a DD whose nn is Andie someday. I like Andie for a girl but think she'd definitely need a "proper" name, and I don't like Andrea or Amanda. Alexandra is nice though...

Alexandra is a brilliant name and has huge scope for nns - so you may not end up with Andie, but if you push it you could, I guess.

PavlovtheCat · 23/01/2011 08:40

I know two children called Andie.

diddl · 23/01/2011 09:21

Andie-hate it.

Makes me think that the parents wanted a boy so gave the girl a boys name anyway.

PlanetLizard · 23/01/2011 09:53

Agree with diddl. How about Annie as a nickname? There are lots of nice longer names that have Annie as nn.

argylesocks · 23/01/2011 17:53

Anastastia? Miranda? Antoinette?

Personally I like Anastasia or Alexandra and either of them would work with Andie. Anastasia especially, and it's pretty and exotic.

I like Andie but is it because you like the name or because your husband is Andrew?

personally, I don't like when people name their kids after themselves. I think it's icky but I know lots of people disagree. But if you just like the name, go for it. I think it's cute.

CockneySparra · 23/01/2011 17:56

I quite like it.

I know an Andie nn for Andrea (pronounced Arn-dray-a, rather than Anne-dree-a).

Pandora?

crystalglasses · 23/01/2011 18:02

Call her Andie anyway. I know people whose nickname bears little resemblance to their real name

CheerfulYank · 23/01/2011 18:14

Argyle it's both. I think it's a cute name for a girl (and I don't usually like traditionally boy's names for girls, though I do think Georgie as a nn for Georgiana is nice :)) and also I think it's cool because DH is Andrew. He gave me a Confused when I suggested it, though, so it's probably not happening anyway :)

mousymouse · 23/01/2011 18:15

how about leander? I know technically a boys name, but I know of two female leanders.

moshchops · 23/01/2011 20:46

I know two Anastasia's who use Andie as a nick-name.

PlanetLizard · 23/01/2011 21:04

Georgie/Georgiana is gorgeous :)

mathanxiety · 23/01/2011 21:23

Leandra would be a feminine version of Leander. I like the suggestion of Miranda.

However, your DH seems averse to the idea so I would really be inclined to go in another direction.

hollywoodstar · 24/01/2011 15:26

I know an Andra, known as Andy.

hollywoodstar · 24/01/2011 15:27

By the way, that's not a typo, she is Andra!

CheerfulYank · 24/01/2011 16:06

DH is adverse to everything under the sun until given eons a bit of time to mull it over, mathanxiety. That's why I'm having these conversations with him before we TTC. :o Saves time in the long run!

my niece's middle name is Andreonia after her great granny

pranma · 24/01/2011 16:11

Cassandra
Miranda
Andrina[remember the ballet stories]

iskra · 24/01/2011 16:12

Cassandra.

Nightstar · 24/01/2011 17:56

I love the name Andi for a girl. I know a Miranda who uses it (mainly because she hates her name though) and an Andrea. Personally I like Andrea, though someone did once tease her and call her Andrex, which really upset her.
