I have to know: is Seabass really a name? Really?

I heard the nursery workers at DSs nursery calling a baby Seabass. I looked up at the list of babies on the board. It said Seabass.

Was I hallucinating? Or is it an ancient or literary name and I am being ignorant?

Was it the name of a horse in a film? Is it a fish?

IHeartKingThistle · 20/01/2011 23:21

The horse was Seabiscuit I think! Sea bass is definitely a fish, but is the baby named after the fish?!

Seabass? Delicious with new potatoes and salald!

gallicgirl · 20/01/2011 23:22

was it Sebastian but maybe shortened?

HaveToWearHeels · 20/01/2011 23:22

Sea Biscuit was the name of the horse I think.
Not that I can condone anyone calling their child Seabass, but what is the surname ?

Pterosaur · 20/01/2011 23:23

That's Seabiscuit (the horse). Now there's a good name.

Perhaps conception followed a particularly fine dinner.

PlanetLizard · 20/01/2011 23:23

Sebas is a boy's name. I'm guessing it was a spelling mistake.

SecretNutellaFix · 20/01/2011 23:23

Sorry, for being facetious, but it could be a phonetic spelling of a name that's been misheard?

Pterosaur · 20/01/2011 23:24

I did wonder.

Where does Sebas come from, PlanetLizard?

mamacorner · 20/01/2011 23:25

Winkle.

IHeartKingThistle · 20/01/2011 23:30

Ooh it could be Sebas, couldn't it? It definitely had an 'a' in it on the board but maybe it was a spelling mistake.

Don't know the surname, we're quite new to the nursery!

Guppy
Plankton (I know that's not a fish)
Minnow

IHeartKingThistle · 20/01/2011 23:31

Can't believe I didn't make the Sebastian connection! I feel weirdly relieved that there might be a rational explanation!

I have read that Sebas is derived from Seba, which is a Biblical name. Seba was one of Noah's great grandsons. The meaning is "he drank wine"! Sebas is apparently also in Dutch usage as a short form of Sebastian.

gleechie · 21/01/2011 10:04

I call OH Pollock every now and then Grin

Bue · 21/01/2011 11:18

I know a little Sebastian nicknamed Sebas. That would have been it!
