It is pronounced sim-ON

Not Simon. Not Simone.

Sim as in 'simple'
On as in 'on the table'

Emphasis on 'on'.

How would this be spelled?

Simone

It's not a name.

Or so you mean Simeon? Is it for a girl or a boy?

poissonrouge · 20/01/2011 18:20

It's a girl's name. I don't know what to write on the birthday card. I have only ever heard it said, never seen it written.

dd1 had a nursery teacher and it was pronounced sim-ON but spelt Simone; I think it is the French pronunciation.

I knew another woman (German) who pronounced it "Zi-moaner"

And I have heard English people pronounced Simone "Si-moan"

It is one of those names with several acceptable pronunciations, but individual pronunciations vary.

Could you not ask someone if you know her well enough to send a card?

I would be fairly clear it is Simone.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 20/01/2011 18:24

I think it would be Simone. I think lollipop is right with the UK/moan pronunciation :o

onepieceoflollipop · 20/01/2011 18:25

I'm not often right but dd drilled it into me from the age of 2 "her name is Si-MON mummy, don't say Si-MOAN!"

poissonrouge · 20/01/2011 18:27

Simone then. Thanks all :)
