What do you think of Wendy. I am loving it, and it is currently top spot as a nn for our top name Gwendolen.
Do you think Wendy should be a nn, or a name it its own right?
I just love it!

Also pondering Gladys - it has been on our list for a while, but I am starting to love it more I think. It sounds so bright and cheery (obviously!). Trouble is two of my dc's (we have 4 dc's) are called Amos and Iris - is it too similar?

I need twins!

Have you heard of Gwendolina? Just a thought. Not keen on Wendy - sorry all wendy's, just reminds me of peter pan!

swanandduck · 19/01/2011 16:24

Gladys and Wendy Shock Shock Shock.

Pinkjenny · 19/01/2011 16:26

My extremely lovely mum is called Wendy. She absolutely loves her name. I wouldn't use it though.

swanandduck · 19/01/2011 16:30

But that's the thing. It's the name of an extremely lovely mum not a baby.

StickyProblem · 19/01/2011 16:36

I always think of weird Wendy in Peter Pan. Having said that, I do like it.
Is there a Welsh connection?
Sorry but Gladys is blue rinse for me too.

joydivisionovengloves · 19/01/2011 16:58

Gladys is awful. Please don't.

mrsweasleyismyalterego · 19/01/2011 17:24

mrsweasleyismyalterego · 19/01/2011 17:25

GwendolineMaryLacey · 19/01/2011 17:27

Drippy? Humph Angry

Wendy I could see but Gladys is foul, sorry.

CabbagefromaBaby · 19/01/2011 17:55

I really don't like the name Gladys. It looks funny.

and I have never known a nice Wendy - two absolutely evil Wendies but not one single nice one.

I couldn't do it, sorry.

CabbagefromaBaby · 19/01/2011 17:57

LOL Sacharissa!

and oh I did have an autnie Wendy as well. I'd forgotten about her as they got divorced. She was Ok, very curt and northern and stuff but she was alright.

Where are the lovely wendies of the world? there must be a club somewhere surely.

Sacharissa of course is delightful. Smile

pookamoo · 19/01/2011 18:02

I think Wendy is quite 1960s, a bit like Pam and Susan...
In about 15/20 years there will be lots of them, just as we have loads of Rubies and Evies at the moment.

Have you thought of Ruby, OP, would go nicely with Pearl and Iris I think.

Having said that, I like Wendy as a name itself, or Gwen, not so keen on Gwendoline (makes me think of Wallace and Gromit a bit!) Grin

I like Gladys, though, but it's one of those "old lady" names that hasn't made a comeback yet, a bit like Marjorie and Marigold.

pookamoo · 19/01/2011 18:03

Oh, I know two LOVELY LOVELY Wendies.

SacharissaCripslock · 19/01/2011 18:03

No, I think you are right - all Wendy's are definitely evil - just ask my children. Grin

CabbagefromaBaby · 19/01/2011 18:17

LOL Grin Just stick pins in a cabbage, it's the usual way people do it...

I'm a Susan (well almost) so really we are on a level playing field. I loathe the name Susan.

Himalaya · 19/01/2011 18:26

How about Mabel?

I think of my Great Aunt Gladys in her nineties and her daughter Wendy. She was known affectionately by her sisters as 'Glad', which is kind of nice, I think.

She also has a daughter called Eunice (but that's on her bc and not what she's known by). She had sisters called Phyllis (my grandmother - I'm now beginning to love this name, though I never thought I would), Joyce and Jean among others.

I'm not sure if I'm ready for a revival of Gladys - you are perhaps more forward thinking than me. I think you could certainly go for Wendy, though - I knew a little Wendy, though personally, I prefer Gwen as a diminutive of Gwendoline.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 19/01/2011 18:41

I think the proper Welsh spelling is Gwladys - but I may be wrong...

minmooch · 19/01/2011 20:05

Isla

minmooch · 19/01/2011 20:06

Isla - think this would go with your other children's names.

molfin · 19/01/2011 20:19

I am in the anti Wendy camp - it has no substance. But I also think Gladys is pretty bad. Sorry

molfin · 19/01/2011 20:22

If you are going old school what about Sheila/ My wee gran is a gorgeous beholder of the name.

tummytickler · 19/01/2011 21:15

molfin not so keen on Sheila, but do love Shirley

minmooch Not keen on Isla, too popular, super faddy and I already have an Iris, would rather a different initial. Thanks though!

therisalight dh loves Jean, I am afraid it is up and coming and there will be millions in a couple of years though, and this is putting me off - just cannot shake that feeling!

pookamoo - I also love Marigold and Marjorie a lot! Dh not keen on either, I could work on him though - my list is getting longer! No to Ruby, far too popular, we know too many of them but might be a possibility for a mn.

swanandduck I am hoping my baby will grow old and be a mother one day - so it should work fine Grin

Thanks for opinions again.
I am soooooo loving Marigold too!

My Mum is Gladys. She has always hated it! It was dated even in her day.
