Really love Cameron as either a middle or first name for our baby if it's a boy but it according to the mumsnet babyname finder it's common and council estates were mention Confused

It's my gran's middle name (she's scottish and was her mother's maiden name- scottish tradition apparently) and it would mean alot to her if the baby had Cameron in there somewhere as DD has a family name for a middle name from my other grandparents.

The common factor doesn't bother me exactly (we're not exactly posh) but don't really want by as yet unborn baby being written off as a chav. Or it being assumed that I vote Tory (I'm not a tory hater or supporter but my dad will take the piss as it is).

We have a couple of Cameron's at my school and it's in a lovely area of scotland.

No girls so far, although I like the name for a girl too, Cameron Diaz is the only one I've heard of and I've been teaching for 12 years so I hear a lot of names!!

I also agree Kamaran doesn't really count it's a completely different name.

Good Luck and I hadn't noticed the anagram either but now I think it's even nicer!

I'm a teacher and know a fair few. They come from a wide range of backgrounds but in my experience have mostly been lovely boys.

rachel1970 · 27/01/2011 12:58

I always think of Cameron Diaz when I hear the name.

lilly13 · 29/01/2011 18:09

Love it! I associate it with aristocracts, however, I am not a Brit. It is very rare in America and Continental Europe...

AlpinePony · 30/01/2011 16:45

A gaelic speaker on mn says it means "crooked hill", not "crooked nose".

The whole Cameron Diaz/it's a girl thing makes me cringe. I have no idea why Ms. Diaz's Cuban father chose to give his daughter a gaelic man's name. Confused

As for being named after the PM, his name is David. Is every child named David assumed to have Tory connections?

I'm the mother of a Cameron and don't give a rat's arse if people think I'm chavvy or common or council or whatever. :)

ChippyMinton · 30/01/2011 16:49

Love the anagram. DS(8) was NOT impressed, but I've told him to store it for future use as a cheesy chat-up line Grin.

And no, it is not chavvy. At all.

AllieW · 30/01/2011 22:45

I agree, AlpinePony, I hate it when that happens with celebrities. (Reece Witherspoon is another case in point - and that's a misspelling of a male name in my view too! Worse since she's really called Laura, I believe.)

Mousesmummy · 01/02/2011 19:19

"council estates were mentioned" !!!
Dear God what does that mean OP? You would think that living on a council estate had the same negative connotations as syphilis!
Catch yourself on woman! Living on a council estate is not catching, you can say it out loud and it won't sully your reputation Angry
The only thing your child is likely to inherit from a lovely name such as Cameron is it's mothers prejudice!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 01/02/2011 19:22

Cameron is no biggie up here - I know a few boys with that name, and none are (shhh)chavvy Grin. Go for it - it's a lovely name.

saffy85 · 01/02/2011 20:33

Erm... I grew up on a council estate, as did both my parents mousemummy so no I'm not prejudice. Christ Hmm

I didn't mean it the way you're saying, just that I don't want my DC being written off as a chav or whatever based on their name, so I came here for opinions. Seems alot of posters on here write off names as chavvy.

FWIW I still love the name and I am determined to use it if I have a boy (I can't see it on a girl... just can't. name seems to masculine). I just wanted confirmation that the name in question rocks as does my taste. Grin

Meanwhile would you like some vinegar for that big massive chip on your shoulder Mousemummy?

The lady doth protest too much!

talkingnonsense · 01/02/2011 21:28

And also an anagram of Menorca!

saffy85 · 01/02/2011 21:46

I love all these anagrams! I'm quite thick when it comes to this stuff. Grin

Just got to agree on a name to go with Cameron now. I love thinking of names definately most fun part of pregnancy imo. Smile
