I LOVE Dorcas - shame husband doesn't feel the same!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 13/01/2011 18:11

Docas does have something about it. I think it has the same meaning as Tabitha - (I seem to remember reading that in a baby name book, but then my brain is baby mush at the moment, so I might've dreamt it!).

Shame 'cos I think Jezebel is a really cool name!

ChippingIn · 13/01/2011 18:13

Dorcas - that's brilliant.

It would completely save all the children in the class having to decide who to bully!

There is a reason that none of those are used.

ZZZenAgain · 13/01/2011 18:14

I have met a (grown-up) Dorcas. I find it an awful name - although she really was very nice.

tebbles · 13/01/2011 18:14

Dorcas has terrible teasing implications. Should never be considered :(

ZZZenAgain · 13/01/2011 18:25

"Jezebel...No-one is going to give their child a name that has taken on negative associations - in this case, with a certain type of woman"

well we have definitely had that name come up on baby name threads and people do seem to have chosen it despite the negative connotations.

None of those names appeal to me. Certainly not Radbod or Gomer.

mackereltaitai · 13/01/2011 18:33

zipporah circumcised her son with a flint - not very MN really.

quite like wilgefortis and her beard - would suit me. Can't see it for a baby girl though.

ensure · 13/01/2011 18:39

I have met a Zipporah. In her twenties.

mathanxiety · 13/01/2011 18:41

I know a Tsiporah (same name, more Yiddish). And a Hephzibah.

Love Jezebel but is Achsah not now just Asher (which I also love)?

Grin@ "zipporah circumcised her son with a flint - not very MN really."

GandalfyCarawak · 13/01/2011 19:08

It's not in the list but I love Josiah, and don't get why it isn't used.

Lol @ "zipporah circumcised her son with a flint - not very MN really."

purpleturtle · 13/01/2011 19:13

I know a couple of Josiahs. Both under 5.

AnnOnimous · 13/01/2011 20:26

Dorcas was a character in seven brides for seven brothers!

PlanetLizard, my daughter is called Tamar (pronounced 'tay mar'; it is a name that has been used in our family for hundreds of years, yet most people have never heard of ut and are suprised it is a biblical name.

ShakinScarecrow · 13/01/2011 23:09

Sorry, missed a closing bracket there!

PlanetLizard · 13/01/2011 23:15

It's a lovely name ShakinScarecrow :)

clumsymumluckybaby · 13/01/2011 23:39

i love the name jezebel ...i nearly did it,really, really nearlyGrin

Bue · 14/01/2011 12:15

It's a shame Jezebel is completely unuseable. I think it's a beautiful name, an interesting alternative to something a bit overused like Isabel.

Barbeasty · 14/01/2011 12:46

DD's names were biblical, including one from PlanetLizard's list, but neither was the name of a saint, which my husband wanted for DD's baptism.

Whilst we went with Rose, I did have fun telling people that we were going to give her the second middle name of Hedwig. They believed it too, as it is a variation of Jadwiga, her Godmother's name.
