Need name advice for TWINS - boy and girl!

I'm having twins, a boy and girl which we're sooo excited about but really struggling with come up with names we love for either of them - would really appreciate some suggestions!

I'm very keen on strong, traditional boys names like Jack, William, George etc but they just all seem very common at the moment. Does anyone have any suggestions for boys names that are similar but rarer? His middle name will be Edward or Alasdair after grandads (we considered both but I think it is a bit much!)

As for DD to be, I'm fairly keen on something unusual (though I do love more conventional Lucy, Rebecca and some others), as long as it isnt going to be a nightmare to spell. I really, really love the name Aliena... but worried it is too unusual and would just get shortened to Ali which I dont think I like on a girl. What do people think about Aliena?

Would love to hear any suggestions for one or both of the twins! Thankyou :)

That was Giles, not Files!

Highlandgirl · 08/01/2011 10:12

Ohhh twins....!!! You say you like traditional names for boys, but why not the same for girls...??

Rebecca is a lovely name. What about Sarah, Helen, Suzannah or Anna

Not keen on Aliena!

Thomas Edward sounds lovely, in fact i might add that to our list...Smile

One of my twins was supposed to be a girl and we were going to name her Phoebe and the other twin either Joe or Harry. Two boys popped out though so we got Joe AND Harry ;)

I love Rebecca for a girl (also like Rachel and Ruth).

For a boy - James

These are classic but not too predictable

Juliet and Marcus

I like Patrick, Peter and Dominic too.

Aliena is a bit odd. I prefer Eliza

MentalFloss · 08/01/2011 18:26

I quite like:

Nina and Max
Susanna and Jacob
Celia and Henry
Scarlett and Nathaniel
Naomi and Joshua
Alicia and Sebastian
Alexandra and Theodore

I am also a bit sad with the whole twin naming thing!

Jay14 · 08/01/2011 21:50

thanks for all your comments and advice!

Bit sad about Aliena... but I was expecting people to dislike it. Funnily enough I'd never thought of the Alien thing, I think because I say it like Ali-eh-na really fast. But I do admit maybe it is a bit too weird!

Highlandgirl, I do like loads of traditional girls names, but really wanted to have something fairly unique for DD, not quite sure why. But I think if the right name crops up I will use it even if it is fairly popular.

I really like loads of the names suggested, Helena and Anna are being strongly considered! Was keen on Scarlett but sadly was immediately vetoed by DH! Still dont feel I have found 'the one' yet, silly as it sounds!

Really like Patrick and Miles. Also had considered Peter before - what do people think of this name? I think there's potential to love it but I can't decide if it would suit a young child.

I really appreciate all your suggestions!

please do not give them same initials or rhyming names, the problem with edward or alistair as middle names makes it so easy for initials to spell words so need to be careful

like marcus, christopher, jonathan

for your daughter not sure about aliena at all, maybe anthea, abigail eleanor helena rosemary

catinboots · 08/01/2011 21:56

Hugo and Eliza

OldishMotherHubbard · 08/01/2011 22:30

Congrats on your twins - I also have boy/girl twins! They are William and Anna.

I had a thing about what the names sounded like when merged (Like Jedward - mad pregnancy thing, I think, and I'm sure no one else on here would agree!!).
I wanted to call my son Ben, but thought they would be known collectively as Benanna (ie Banana!)

I don't know any other Annas of her age - quite a few Annabelles though... There are quite a few Williams about though.

Love Patrick and Peter - especially Patrick. I really wanted Edward as a name but DH vetoed it...

If I had another set I would think about:

James / Jamie
Joseph (Joe)
Ben
Thomas (Tom)
Max
Sam

Kate/Katie
Eliza
Amy
Alice
Alicia
Olivia
Beatrice
Emilia
Rosie

MrsLucasNorth · 08/01/2011 22:36

William & Tessa (Will & Tess)

ILoveMyBrick · 08/01/2011 23:06

I'm having twins too, a boy and a girl Grin congrats!

I love your boy middle names Smile I would be tempted to use them as first names!

Interesting that some people have said not to have names with the same initials- I don't see why this would be a problem to be honest

fairimum · 08/01/2011 23:13

I have an Iona

fairimum · 08/01/2011 23:14

Also like Isla but few more about now!

spler · 08/01/2011 23:38

ooh I have B/G twins.
The boy is John (Johnny) which is the best name ever IMO and fits your criteria.
What about Susannah? Very lovely too.

MazzzaG · 08/01/2011 23:38

I love luca and lucia but I'm half Italian and if I had twins that's the names I'd call them x

KateF · 08/01/2011 23:47

Did you get Aliena from the Morland Dynasty books?
I do know an Alina, named after grandmothers Alice and Marina, and think it's quite pretty.
