Hector or Bruno?

Hi everyone,

just wondered what your opinions are on these names?

Don't like either, but if I had to choose it would be Bruno.

My main issue with Hector is the lack of nicknames - Heck ?

hector makes me think of a german shepard. I think bruno is far better!

Hector was a complete hero in the Iliad, great dad, loving husband, really noble - but he knows he has to go and fight Achilles and he will die. One really sad bit when he's got all his armour on and goes to say his final goodbye to his wife and their son (think he was called Astyanax, there's a name and a half!) and the baby's frightened by the waving mohican-style hair on the top of his helmet.
In short, great man, terrible fate.

My husband was nearly called Agamemnon. Glad that he wasn't a)because his dad would have been following the tradition of pretentious archaeologists b)because he has (and now I have) one of the world's weirdest surnames and it would have been TOO CRUEL and c)because Agamemnon sacrificed his own daughter to the gods, cheated on his wife, brought home a mistress and then was all surprised when she murdered him.

Bruno makes me think of Frank Bruno.

I don't like either I'm afraid.

I love both names. The character hector in the Iliad is brave, and pretty honourable (in the film troy he was the one eric bana played) so you can focus on that rather than the meaning if you like!

DD was going to be a Bruno if she was a boy. My friend (who had lived in Italy for a few years) was telling me about a lovely hunky Italian guy called Bruno that she knew. And it's cute a cute name for a little boy.

Hector is the anglicised version of a gaelic name, meaning 'brown horse' also, actually.
And anyway, the other origin of the name has the meaning 'to restrain' not to bully.

I don't like Bruno. It does just make me think of the film.

Dislike Hector. The word (to hector, hectoring etc) is so widely used that it is hard to focus on any other meaning imo. Also don't think it has any nice nicknames.

Bruno is much better, although I've only known dogs in the past with this name.

We chose Bruno for DC2 but had DD. This was before the film, though.
