Boys' names inspiration

We've decided not to find out what we're having with DC3 and, as it's still early days and DH refuses to talk names until 3rd trimester, I feel the need to get some ideas. I am just hopelessly stumped. Have a whole list of girls' names I love (odd, as we have 2 DDs) but boys' names just leave me cold.

To give you some idea of where I'm coming from, the two I like so far are (don't laugh):

Fergus
Wilfred

Please, someone, inspire me. I need a good few months of trying out names before I can commit to anything.

I love Fergus and Wilfred also
Gilbert
Basil
Wilbur
Ernest
Frank
Reggie

Wilfred is a bit googy sounding to me, but William Fredrick with nn Wilfred would be ok (imo).

I really like Fergus. I love Scottish names. I love Donald and Gregor too.

Victor, Dominic, Saul, Peter, Patrick, Howard, Richard, Guy, Gideon, Angus, Marcus .. they're all fairly classic without being top ten.

Prinpo · 29/12/2010 19:55

Thanks - like Gilbert a lot.

Angus was another I'd thought of. I love Marcus (or Magnus) but we have one child whose name starts with M and I would like to try for different initials (don't know why that matters to me).

Hugo, Cameron, Eason, Ellis, Kirk

ValiumTinselton · 29/12/2010 20:18

I mean goofy.

ValiumTinselton · 29/12/2010 20:19

Yeah good idea to avoid giving two children the same initial imo. It's not the end of the world if they have the same initial, but if possible, use another letter.

Prinpo · 29/12/2010 20:22

Glad I'm not the only one with the initial thing.

Had been wondering what googy meant... Grin.

Thanks for other suggestions. I feel a slightly Scottish theme emerging.

Leo
Gabriel
Edward
Arthur

Love Fergus, Marcus and Magnus. Wilfred could be teased with Willy.
How about
Quentin
Tobias
Felix
Leonard

BelligerentYhoULE · 29/12/2010 20:58

Fergus - no
Wilfred - yes, I think this could have a huge rise in popularity though.

I like:

Hector
Sebastian
Laurence
Benedict
Bartholomew
Barnaby
Timothy
Tobias
Thaddeus

BelligerentYhoULE · 29/12/2010 20:59

Also -
Elias
Ellis
Edward
Edmund

rachel234 · 29/12/2010 21:18

Lovely underused names on this thread. I love
Fergus
Marcus
Quentin
Thaddeus
Leonard
Benedict

I guess William/Wilfred could lead to some teasing re. Willy amongst silly schoolboys, but lots of names can be turned into silly names imo.

Prinpo · 31/12/2010 13:07

Good point about Wilfred. I'd been thinking of Wilfred Owen but DD1 and DD2 like nothing more than reciting "My friend Billy had a ten foot willy" etc..

Quentin makes me think of Famous Five Confused. I love Hector, but not sure whether it's a bit comedy cutesy, IYKWIM. I think that's my problem with boys' names: they're either traditional and done to death or slightly comedic - Stan, that sort of thing - which I like but not sure it's what I want to go for.

This would all be so much easier if we decided to find out and it was a girl...

Thanks for all your help. Any more ideas much appreciated.

I love Wilfred. I also love Lorcan and Oscar (random names I know!)

BlueChampagne · 06/01/2011 13:11

Lewis for your potential Scottish theme
Laurence
Justin
Harvey
Ryan
Julius instead of Marcus? I agree on the initials thing too.

Komondor · 06/01/2011 17:05

Other suggestions are Fraser and Giles

phonix · 06/01/2011 20:16
