Take advantage of DH's good nature or play fair?

Sorry in advance for length.

Suspect I know the answer to this one, but...

DS2 due in 6 weeks. We have v boring taste in names, so after going through the baby name book, have only a shortlist of five. Two we're not bothered about, so really it's three choices.

Jack - DH's favourite and I love it, but it's only just stopped being Number One after 11 years and I think that's too popular. I have a v popular name myself and I did get bored with being Frazzled Surname or Label all the time, you know?

William - Will/Billy for short. Both like it, and is the name of the lovely guy who rescued me when I got stuck in the snow last week but I don't love it.

Finn - I adore this name. DS2 has been this in my head all along, which I realise was stupid but I really really want to call him this.

DH had said I could name a boy if we had one, but now misremembers and claims he said the opposite.

However being a lovely guy, he says he's not mad on the name, would go for Finley/Finlay (which I don't like as much) or if nec would just go with Finn as it's more important to me and he knows he'll get used to it.

He's ace, but I feel bad about picking a name we both don't love.

Having had a husband who tricked me into naming our first son, and then having named all out further children himself with me chosing dc1's middle name, I would say that what name you chose is actually less important than you think. I discounted my first son's name for a daft reason and actually now I can't imagine him being called anything else and it was a great choice.

I wouldn't say I loved any names when we were choosing. I either liked them or I didn't.

No, you're right about the loving names thing - DS1's name was a suggestion of DH's that I went with more in the spirit of 'it'll do' than anything else (the name itself had never been a favourite but the significance of it was special to us).

As you say, I can't imagine him being anything else, and it's a great choice.

So I do agree with you - but which one would you choose ?

Feed it back to him -
"you're a great guy and I know you'll go along with Finn to please me.
it makes me feel dishonest to do this, I feel I'm taking advantage.
I'm saying no more now, but tell me straight, not right now, but when you've thought about it, what we should do."

Then leave it to him. No urgency, you've got weeks before you get down to the registry office. He'll either say "yep, Finn is fine, it's really growing on me". Or whne the baby comes you'll both look at it and say "He's really an Andrew isn't he?". Or soemthing else will happen, but you won't feel guilty/bad.

I would chose Jack or Finn.

I liked William but it wouldn't go with our surname if shortened to Billy and I don't like Willy.

What about Finnan?

Agree with catinthehat2 that once the baby is born you may look at him and think of a completley different name.

catinthehat, I did say more or less that to him (esp about feeling guilty) and he just told me not to worry about it. Gaaaah.

Think we will just have to wait and see (or see how bad the labour is, I suppose...).

Is strange, because DS1 was named after about 16 weeks and we never deviated at all.

I think you need to both like a name to be honest.

I like catinthehat's suggestion though.

Why not call him Finlay or Finnbar or Finnian and just call him nn Finn? Then you both get your own way
