It's better, at least it's a real name. Monty is just a nickname of a surname.

elseIlltellyourfather · 20/12/2010 12:23

Praise indeed Smile

AllieW · 20/12/2010 13:07

I know a Gideon (just slightly younger than me). I think it's ok, but it does remind me of 'giddy'.

elseIlltellyourfather · 20/12/2010 13:20

yes, does lack a good nn

seeker · 20/12/2010 13:24

I have a friend called Gideon - he's always known as Gidi.

It is a very Jewish name. Not that that's a problem, obviously, but people will make assumptions.

LynetteScavo · 20/12/2010 13:26

No, no, no, not Gideon!!!

What's wrong with Monty? It's great. Gideon is dreadful!

Bunbaker · 20/12/2010 13:31

Monty sounds like an abbreviation or a nickname. Gideon is OK but as soon as I saw the name I thought of the Gideon's bible you see in every hotel room.

ShoppingDays · 20/12/2010 13:36

Not particularly keen I'm afraid. It sounds rather clunky.

Firawla · 20/12/2010 13:43

I think I prefer Monty. Monty can work, I've heard children called it

Nightstar · 20/12/2010 16:04

Monty always reminds me of gay Uncle Monty from Withnail and I. Short for Montague Withnail. It's not just a surname amoung the upper classes.

Giddeon is the sound you make when encouraging your horse to go faster. Though a good traditional name. How about Gabriel?

BelligerentYhoULE · 20/12/2010 16:14

I really like Gideon. I only know one and as far as I know, he has never been called Giddi.

1percentawake · 20/12/2010 20:48

I prefer Monty - would have liked for DS but DH definitely didn't agree! Gideon = bible.

EBDteacher · 20/12/2010 21:49

Gideon IS very Jewish.

Think Monty would have to be 'carried off'. DNephew was very nearlycalled Monty and then called something more traditional in case he couldn't 'carry it off'. Turns out he really could have, but it's too late now!

I still love it.

Trevvy · 22/12/2010 12:04

My DS is Monty Victor :) .. like Gideon but thats what one of our horses is called - we call him Giddy.

I think Gideon would be/is harder to carry off than Monty myself.

Komondor · 22/12/2010 14:46

Prefer Monty.

I like the boys name Miles.

Gideon is just poncey.

LetThereBeRock · 22/12/2010 14:50

I quite like it,certainly more than Monty which is dreadful.

Nightstar · 22/12/2010 15:19

Don't the Gideons put the bible in hotel rooms?

zozzle · 24/12/2010 22:11

Gideon loads better - and biblical to boot which is always a plus! Monty sounds v. public school to me - but then I've got a thing about posh sounding preppy names (not my thing at all).
