Roman

We havent disclosed this to anyone and Im getting worried about what our family and friends reactions will be towards the name once he is born.

We both love the name, so please dont be too unkind if you dont like the name

But what do you think to the name Roman?

Also, which middle name should we choose

Roman Isaac
Roman Henry
Roman Stanley (family name)

i love it actually, it's a great name

i like Roman Isaac

Darnsarfupnorf · 12/12/2010 23:30

aww romans lovely :) im worried how my family will react to the name weve chosen too but at the end of the day its your baby :) theres always gonna be someone who doesnt like it but as long as you both love it and its nothing horrendous theyll all get used to it :)

Roman Isaac is my fave i think, Roman Stanley reminds me of Norman Stanley from porridge :s

chipsncurrysauce · 12/12/2010 23:33

Blimey. Good luck with that one. Remember you might think about how cool your friends will find it, but your poor son has to live iwth it. Maaybe keep it as a middle name?

AitchTwoOh · 12/12/2010 23:34

i like it, although i must say i do also think of the satanist in rosemary's baby.

ShoppingDays · 12/12/2010 23:35

Not particularly keen on Roman - sorry. But if you like it, then use it :)

I like Roman Henry best of your options, then Roman Isaac.

Danthe4th · 12/12/2010 23:35

It makes me think of Ronan

eviscerateyourmemory · 12/12/2010 23:38

I love the name Roman.
Of your choices for midle name I prefer Roman Isaac.

Roman is fairly unusual, though I think that it has become more common in recent years, so maybe friends/family wont be too surprised.

Roman is a lovely name! Love Roman Stanley! x

lowrib · 13/12/2010 00:05

I used to know a little boy called Roman (he'd be about 15 by now I think - I;ve lost contact with his family).

It's a lovely name.

The thing about unusual names is you'll always get a bunch of conservative (small c!) mnetters saying "don't do it" but IME in RL, people get used to unusual names once they've actually heard them a bit. The name becomes your DC's name, not a name they've never heard of IYSWIM.

PracticallyImperfectInEveryWay · 13/12/2010 00:35

Love Roman Isaac.

We didn't disclose DDs name to family either after reactions to some of the earlier choices. I know that some of them wouldn't have liked it if they had heard it before the birth but upon meeting DD with the name they all claim to love it :).

mathanxiety · 13/12/2010 06:21

I love it. Great name and quite 'international'. I like either Roman Isaac or Roman Henry.

When your family and friends see him they will love him, and his name too.

diddl · 13/12/2010 07:51

I love it!

I like Roman Isaac or Roman Henry.

spler · 13/12/2010 10:24

It's one of my favourite ever boy's names. I am very prejudiced about using names from a different culture though so would never use it as it's not a British name. Is it Polish?
Doesn't seem to matter so much these days though. Lots of people using names from all over with no link to that place.
All middle names are good.
Hope birth goes well!

reddaisy · 13/12/2010 10:27

I love it and it is still on our list for any potential boys in the future. I didn't like any of the middle names unfortunately as I didn't think they went with Roman.

reddaisy · 13/12/2010 10:29

Oh and you are definitely doing the right thing about not telling people the name.

Some people in our HATED our DDs name and I wish DP and I had kept our ideas to ourself until she had been born.

fel1x · 13/12/2010 10:31

Very nice! (in fact might put it on my boys list Smile ) I like Roman Isaac best

evamummy · 13/12/2010 13:19

Lovely, classic underused name.

There will always be some who prefer popular names like Archie, Alfie & Jack and so peoples' tastes are just different.

MistletoeMush · 13/12/2010 15:19

Great name. Like Roman Stanley best.

ChippingIn · 13/12/2010 15:25

I don't like it myself - but he's not my baby! & wouldn't it be boring if we all liked the same names! I'd put money on you thinking my choices were 'boring' :)

I didn't like any of my Godchildrens names nor my nices/nephews Grin - but they soon become that name and the name itself is unimportant as you just love them for who they are.

As a middle name I prefer Henry to the others - but if you go for Issac - just check out his initials as something like RIM will probably get him a bit of teasing as he gets older!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 13/12/2010 15:26

As Stanley is a family names I'd go with Roman Stanley.

taintedsnow · 13/12/2010 15:29

I think Roman Isaac sounds best. I'm not madly keen on Roman though (I too associated it with Rosemary's Baby), I think it sounds a bit pretentious and trendy. But the fact that you love it is what matters. :)

MarineIguana · 13/12/2010 15:29

I love it and I would also choose Roman Stanley.

We chose a name for our DD that raised some eyebrows to put it mildly. You can't get a less positive response than my mum's which was Shock Shock Shock "You CAN'T call a baby XXXXX!!!!" (it is a real, if rare, girl's name btw not something crazy)

The secret is not to give a flying f* what people think! :)

mavornia · 13/12/2010 15:34

DS2 is Roman and he's now 17 months old

I love the name but I did have a wobble after he was born as people's reactions were so negative

However, dh was utterly convinced that it was the right name for him and he didn't like anything else on our list nearly as much so we went with Roman

tbh my mum still doesn't really like it and I do gaze at ds2 sometimes and try different names out for him in my head

I love the name but it's not really a cute baby name iykwim - I can picture ds2 a big strapping rugby player and hear his name being called out as he stands up to accept a trophy or see it printed on the door of his office Grin - I think it's a strong, manly name and he just needs time to grow into it

mavornia · 13/12/2010 15:40

Forgot to say, I like Roman Henry best from your list
