Amelia or Temperance?

Hello!

I'm having a bit of an internal debate about two girl names I quite like...

I have always loved the name Amelia. I found it in my family tree many years ago before it became popular again.. one of the earliest female ancestors I could trace (back in the 1600s!) was called Amelia and I immediately fell in love with the name. I also like it because it makes me think of Amelia Earhart and I think it would be cool for my daughter to share a name with such an amazing woman. The husband loves this name too, so it sounds like a winner... except that in the last couple of years, it has become very popular in the UK, and I am not keen to give my child a name that will be very common. (How dare those other parents choose this name!! LOL)

The other name I like is Temperance. I came across it in the tv show 'Bones', where the lead character is called that, or Tempy for short. It's quite unusual / unique (a fairly important driver for me), and I think it sounds sweet. I also like it because then my daughter would share the same initials as me (as no matter which name we choose, her middle name will be Catherine, which is also my middle name).

So what would you go for?

Amelia
or
Temperance (Tempy for short)
???

Indigo was in my top five but temperance won hands down.

Amelia is lovely, Temperance not so much, it just reminds me of temper tantrum, i expect she would get 'temper temper' a lot at school Confused

I actually like Temperance and would think it hugely favourable that being one of many Amelia's likely to be in their school or even class!

Given the child is 6 I wonder what she is called.

As a side note those liking Temperence may like Clemency.

Beer are you not concerned you've identified yourself with your dds very distinctive full name?

Temperance is a lovely name. My daughter is called Temperance and it really suits her plus it gives her, her own unique identity especially since she is a twin as well. Temperance is a lovely name. Everyone has their own opinions but you don't need to say it like that.

I like Temperance and considered it but we have a daughter already with an equally unusual virtue name and thought two would just be too much.

Amelia is lovely but very popular. I also really like Amalia

Temperance PMSL!!!
Not a massive fan of Amelia, but she'll spend her life with people giggling if she's called Temperance. People are concerned about her temper; I think I'd be more concerned about her alcohol habit :)

Neither - sorry OP. Amelia is way too trendy right now and Temperance and Tempy are really ugly. Clementine? Hermione? Constance?

Amelia definitely.

The original question on this thread is from 2010, so I guess we'll never know what OP went with!

Amelia is really really dull and overused. It’s a wallpaper name now.

Temperance is pretty bad. Always a risk using a virtue name IMO. Sorry it’s a no from me !

Yes don't use Temperance you wouldn't want your child to be in some way linked to the Temperance movement yes it was in the past but other children's parents/grandparents may make the connection and talk about it which either their child will hear or they may talk about with/in front of their child and eventually word will get out.

Wow thanks for spotting ten years ago.
Can't help thinking about AA meetings "My name is Temperance and I am an alcoholic"!
