Is Pearl trashy?

I was thinking of Pearl for DD but people I've mentioned it to have said it's trashy.

I did notice that Shaun Ryder has a DD called Pearl (other is Lulu) and am this is putting me off a bit - espec as he was mentioning his 'Pearly' often on TV.

Also there's Vanessa George...!!

Is it trashy?

I really love Pearl. It was on my list.

hatebeak · 09/12/2010 13:51

You could always go for Margaret and call her Pearl as a nickname. I think I'm right, that Margaret means Pearl and that it has a reasonably well-established nickname status in that context.
Anyway, I think of Pearl as more fashionable than "trashy". It's pretty, either way.

mopsyflopsy · 09/12/2010 14:22

How on earth can you derive Pearl from Margaret Confused?

RunnerHasbeen · 09/12/2010 15:08

Not trashy at all. I think it depends on your accent whether it sounds pretty or not though. I would advise against using the NN pearly/pearlie in certain areas of Scotland as it means (rabbit or sheep) droppings.

ShoppingDays · 09/12/2010 20:10

mopsyflopsy, Margaret comes from the Greek word 'margaron' meaning 'pearl'.

JamieLeeCurtis · 09/12/2010 20:40

I really like it

MissHavishamsDress · 09/12/2010 22:05

Pearl is absolutely gorgeous and I would use it for a future dd if a) I divorced dh (he thinks it's trashy - a man thing methinks) or b) dd1 didn't have an acquaintance called Pearl. Shame, it would go so well with Violet!!

So we're going with Daphne.

Lulu actually means 'pearls', I think.

PressureDrop · 09/12/2010 23:13

I like it... but it does remind me of 'pearl necklace' just a little bit. Well, a lot. Ok, almost every time I hear it.

pearl was on my list... coral too.

AllieW · 10/12/2010 08:21

Absolutely not! Pearl was top of my list had Arthur been a girl. Love it and will still use it if number 3 (in a few years time!) is a girl).

colditz · 10/12/2010 08:22

YUK don't like it.
