I worry that Kari looks downmarket and made-up! WDYT?

I know Kari is a boy's name in Finland, but in Norway it is only used on girls, so looks a little odd to me. Out of curiosity, how would you pronounce it in English? Carey?

I suppose Dita von Teese (sp?) will be out of the picture once your daughter's grown up, but now she's the first person I think of when I hear the name. Which may or may not be what you're looking forWink

nooka · 06/12/2010 03:08

They both seem a bit nicknamish to me, and Kari I think is quite feminine.

SausageMonster · 06/12/2010 22:35

Too chav for me

DilysPrice · 06/12/2010 22:41

If you you don't have familial links with the relevant nationalities then I'd say no.
Kari for a boy will also get a lot of double takes, because it does sound feminine.

CockMeatXmasRaffle · 06/12/2010 22:45

Dita is lovely as Maragrita for a long name, that's what i wanted for my dd, dh vetoed.

Kari I'm not keen on.

PatriciaHolm · 06/12/2010 22:58

Kari sounds to me like a girls name I'm afraid. And how would you pronounce it? Dita's OK, but sounds like a shortened version of something else (perdita?)

BarbieLovesKen · 06/12/2010 23:07

Kari is very feminine imo and to be honest I dont like it anyway.

Dita is ok. I immediately think of Dita Von Teese. Have to agree with PatriciaHolm could you use it as a shortened version of something else?

ShoppingDays · 06/12/2010 23:39

Are there any similar names you like? How about Rita, Vita, Aurita for a girl, Charles (Cary for short), Gregory or Henry for a boy?

Hedwig3 · 07/12/2010 11:03

I went to infant school with a girl called Kari/Cari. Can't remember how it was spelt, but I remember we called her Brumbrum (affectionately) sometimes Xmas Blush

cumbria81 · 08/12/2010 14:26

Kari is a girl's name

Rhubarbgarden · 10/12/2010 08:12

I really like Dita.

belgo · 10/12/2010 08:13

I misread Kari as Karl.

BuntyPenfold · 10/12/2010 09:15

I misread Kari as Karl too.
Kari does sound very feminine to me, and also somehow reminds me of the 'Fame! I wanna live for ever' song or film. I don't know why though.

Dita to me is the pretty young woman with an unfortunate taste for corsetry.
