NeedANameNow's baby name shortlist

NeedANameNow · 04/12/2010 17:46

I'm a namechanger (Pombears, Penguin, Terry Wogan's Cock etc)

Here's the shortlist of baby names I'm considering that I generated with Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder. Let me know what you think.

Boys
Elijah
Nathaniel
Noah
Oliver
Samuel
Tristan

Girls
Ffion
Jennifer
Josephine
Mariana
Miriam
Tamsin

Me and my DH cannot decide on names! I said I'd post our shortlist on Mumsnet and let the MN jury decide!

My favourites from your lists are Noah and Miriam or Jennifer - but I don't actually hate any of them.

gallicgirl · 04/12/2010 17:52

I like Nathaniel but think it's a bit long, and I like Noah.

I like all your girl's names apart from Mariana which I'm afraid doesn't help you much.

5GoldenFimbos · 04/12/2010 17:54

I prefer Sam to Samuel so that would be my choice.

Jennifer.

MuffinMouse · 04/12/2010 17:54

Elijah - ok
Nathaniel - bit of a mouthful
Noah - sounds a bit weak (but others here love it)
Oliver - bit over used but ok
Samuel - same as above
Tristan - love

Ffion - ok
Jennifer - bit ordinary
Josephine - fine if you don't mind Jo
Mariana - LOVE
Miriam - nice but prefer Mariam
Tamsin - great

thisisyesterday · 04/12/2010 17:56

thisisyesterday · 04/12/2010 17:56

josephine could be shortened to josie which is very sweet

panettoinydog · 04/12/2010 18:06

Elijah - don't like, odd sound
Nathaniel - don;t like, Daniel or Nathan would be better
Noah - don't like
Oliver - don't like, mimsy
Samuel - like, Sam is good
Tristan - a bit mimsy

Ffion - don;'t like
Jennifer - don't like
Josephine - Josie is quite nice
Mariana - don;t like but do like Marina
Miriam - nice sound, good
Tamsin - nice sound, good

NeedANameNow · 04/12/2010 18:09

Ooh forgot to put the nn we would like to use:

Boys
Elijah (Eli)
Nathaniel (Nate)
Noah
Oliver (Ollie)
Samuel (Sam)
Tristan (Trist)

Girls
Ffion (Ffi)
Jennifer (Jennie)
Josephine (Josie)
Mariana (Mari)
Miriam (Mim)
Tamsin

We just cannot choose!

Middle name would be:

Boys
James or George

Girls
Joan or Ruby

They are family names so would be nice to use.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Also DS1 is called Thomas (Tom) but realise now it is quite popular so would like something a little bit less so for DC2!

I love Nathaniel (and your choice of nn as Nate, tho think it's quite versatile so could have Nat or Nathan too) and Noah, even if it has become more popular it's my favourite.

Love Miriam from your girl's list.

Think all three sound good along with Thomas/Tom and good with any of your middle names too Smile

SoupDragon · 04/12/2010 18:16

I don't like Tristan or Ffion at all.
The rest are fine.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 04/12/2010 18:45

Samuel and Tamsin for me.

Dexterrocks · 04/12/2010 18:49

Elijah and Tamsin or FFion are my favourites.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 04/12/2010 18:52

Elijah - just reminds me of hobbits
Nathaniel - Hmm - it's OK
Noah - I like it, but I wonder if it's a bit dated?
Oliver - too popular for me, though nothing wrong with it
Samuel - I quite like this despite it being popular
Tristan - I like this though knew a naughty Tristan at school and Tristan Shandy is a bit unfortunate.

Girls
Ffion - not keen
Jennifer - I quite like this - underused, but pretty and everyone knows how to spell it.
Josephine - love it and love nn Posy
Mariana - not too keen
Miriam - not too keen
Tamsin - love it.

BarbieLovesKen · 04/12/2010 19:25

Elijah (Eli) - gorgeous, love it (its on our boys list, love Eli as a nn)
Nathaniel (Nate) - gorgeous
Noah - I wouldnt use this myself, but dont exactly know why I wouldnt. Lovely name.
Oliver (Ollie) - lovely.
Samuel (Sam) - perfectly fine name, I just never liked it to be honest, bit meh.. ordinary and boring.
Tristan (Trist) - really dont like

If I had to pick, either Elijah or Nathaniel.

Girls
Ffion (Ffi) - huh? no. Definately not.
Jennifer (Jennie) perfectly fine name. Very, very ordinary and boring.
Josephine (Josie) fine. Boring.
Mariana (Mari) Ok.
Miriam (Mim) - hate it. Sorry
Tamsin - definately not.

Im really sorry but Im not mad about any of your girls names at all. I cant really pick any if Im honest.

Middle name would be:

Boys
James or George - both are really gorgeous. Elijah James or Nathaniel James are both really, really stunning in my opinion.

Ooooh... I love both of those names.

Girls
Joan or Ruby - both lovely. Either or really. I actually like these both much more than those on your first name list. Would you use Joan Ruby or Ruby Joan? or is that an option?

NeedANameNow · 04/12/2010 21:29

Thanks for all the comments!

Joan or Ruby aren't really contenders for first name because one is my Mum's name and the other is DH's sister's name!

I've just realised what if Tamsin was shortened to Tam cause then it would be Tom and Tam!

Think that is that one out of the running :(

DH is loving Mariana because he is a bit of a Tennyson geek but he also loves Jennifer

I adore Josephine because it is really elegant in my mind but also like Jennifer...

However do you think Jennifer Joan would be too alliterative?

TIA

I think it depends on your surname - what letter it begins with and its length. I think for Jennifer Joan to work it would have to be a longer surname, imo.

What are you thinking for a boy now? have you shortened your list at all? (hint hint Elijah James or Nathanial James...!!!)

NeedANameNow · 04/12/2010 21:48

Surname begins with a F and is 4 syllables but is very English iyswim?

I really do adore Nathaniel because I love the meaning - God has given and one of my favourite authors is Nathaniel Hawthorne (The Scarlett Letter).

ok - just asked my 13yr old dd - and she has said that all of the boys names would get them bullied Hmm, and girls names- ffion is ok, but fifi is just awful, she thinks it like fifi and the flowertots, the rest are awful, especially miriam she wonders why any one could possibly curse their child with that ! sorry x she likes:-
boys: plain names that will see them through life normally and girls names have an ordinary first name nothing that would make them stand out too much - just get bullied - but if you like have a more interesting middle name, if they don't like it, they don't have to tell anyone ! and theregoes the opinion of my 13 yr old dd.

swanandduck · 05/12/2010 17:17

I like Oliver and Jennifer. Mariana is also quite nice. Not mad on the other names.

Komondor · 05/12/2010 19:34

Nathaniel (Nat as nn) and Jennifer (Jenny as nn)

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 05/12/2010 19:35

My favourites are Oliver and Josephine. I quite like Mariana but prefer Marianne.

BelligerentGhoul · 05/12/2010 19:38

Like Elijah. Love Noah, Oliver, Samuel and ADORE Tristan.

Love Jennifer - not fond of the other girls' names but do love Marianne rather than marianna. Not convinced by Jennifer Joan - but then again, nobody really mentions their middle name past babyhood!

ShoppingDays · 05/12/2010 19:39

Elijah (Eli) - like a lot, but a bit of a mouthful if followed by James or George
Nathaniel (Nate) - very nice
Noah - OK but rather faddy
Oliver (Ollie) - OK
Samuel (Sam) - OK
Tristan (Trist) - like

Ffion (Ffi) - don't like
Jennifer (Jennie) - like
Josephine (Josie) - like
Mariana (Mari) - OK but prefer Marianne
Miriam (Mim) - like
Tamsin - not keen

My favourite combinations would be:

Nathaniel James
Tristan George
Samuel James

Miriam Joan
Jennifer Ruby
Josephine Ruby

Hulababy · 05/12/2010 19:42

My favourite is Oliver
