Thanks I like Evie, seems to be very popular in UK, have never heard of it been used in Ireland.

There seems no choice to me.
Evie is ee-vee and
Isla is eye-la

We say 'ee-vun' for even and 'eye-land' for island.

Hope that helps.

By the way, both names are lovely but Isla gets a gold star from me. Gorgeous name.

Ee - vee and
Eye -la

Wigeon · 01/12/2010 21:56

If you like Evie, go with Eva - much more classic and hopefully won't date as quickly. Smile.

NameyNameyChangerydoo · 01/12/2010 21:59

ee-vee

eye-la

BarbieLovesKen · 01/12/2010 22:15

Yeah, Dolanette I havent heard of any Evies at all in Ireland either, despite hearing its quite popular on here. Its lovely.

tammy234 · 01/12/2010 22:20

I know an Isla whose name is pronounced EE-sla, like Isla Bonita or the Spanish for island.

ShoshanaBlue · 01/12/2010 22:48

Eva is pronounced quite differently from Evie though (both nice names).

BonniePrinceBilly · 02/12/2010 00:14

Not really. Eee-vah, eee-vee.

I don't think Evie/Eva is used much in Ireland because its so close to Aoife.

AvengingGerbil · 02/12/2010 10:35

Eva is pronounced Ay- va, not Ee-va.

BonniePrinceBilly · 02/12/2010 12:09

I'll go tell my friend EEE-vah, that will I?

Don't be ridiculous, there is often more than one way to pronounce things. Hmm

typsical · 02/12/2010 14:03

I'd say Eva is Ee-va, and Ava is Ay-va. And Evie is a nice nn for Eva. And also for Eve, Evelyn, Evangeline/a...

Wigeon · 02/12/2010 18:00

As the mother of an Eva and thus the resident expert on this thread Wink, I would say that Eva is pronounced Eee-va by people whose mother tongue is English (me) and often pronounced Ay-va ("ay" rhymes with "hay", not "eye") by many people from Eastern Europe (eg my grandmother-in-law from Hungry).

So everyone is right - there are at least two ways to pronounce Eva. Apart from those people who think there is only one way to pronounce Eva.

RockinRobinBird · 02/12/2010 18:10

So my friend ee-va whose parents came from Poland were wrong ad well then? Wink

Wigeon · 02/12/2010 19:10

Note my language which left room for difference (given I haven't met everyone in eastern Europe): "often" pronounced by "many" people in Eastern Europe Wink.

going · 02/12/2010 19:14

My mum is Easten European and has friends called Eva pronounced EVER.

IWantToBeAFairyWhenIGrowUp · 04/12/2010 06:58
