If it's a boy, and for various reasons, DH is really keen on Thadeus, known as Ted, day-to-day.
I like it, but am not 100% convinved - it just feels pretentious. WDYR?

I like Thadeus.. but then I like unusual names! But Ted doesn't make sense to me day to day - wouldn't it be Thad/Tad (which I prefer actually too...)

MaryAnnSingleton · 26/11/2010 10:28

I like it

belgo · 26/11/2010 10:29

I'd be confused by the Ted nickname.

BelleMama · 26/11/2010 10:30

Bit pretentious tbh. Sorry. Wink

Islandsinthestream · 26/11/2010 10:32

Eek, hmm, I like the "deus" bit, but as a whole the name Thadeus sounds clunky to me.

It also sounds slightly lispy.

I like the way it looks on paper more than the sound of it.

How about Theodore? Edward? Magnus?

eldritch · 26/11/2010 10:35

Inching towards the pretentious I think, sorry. Agree iwth Islands that Theodore is a good alternative though (and shortens nicely to Ted Smile )

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 26/11/2010 10:36

very pretentious.

geekygiraffe · 26/11/2010 10:45

Glad you agree with me : ) More fuel to my fire ; 0

i think its a bit pretentious. Sorry :)

mylifewithstrangers · 26/11/2010 12:01

I love it, also like Thaddeo. Teddy is a cute nickname.

mopsyflopsy · 26/11/2010 12:02

I love Thaddeus. It is becoming fairly popular in Germany (pronounced Ta-day-us).

thisisyesterday · 26/11/2010 12:03

i like Thadeus, it's a nice name

but really not sure how you get Ted from it!

mopsyflopsy · 26/11/2010 12:03

Boris Becker recently had an Amadeus (in response to someone saying they like -deus names).

rachel234 · 26/11/2010 12:14

I love Thaddeus! Sounds classic/elegant and not overused. You could used Ted/Teddy/Taddy as nicknames imo.

What is people's concerns about names being 'pretentious' Confused. Surely we want to try as hard as possible to find lovely names for our children, ideally names that aren't used by thousands of other already, no?

BuntyPenfold · 26/11/2010 15:06

I know a Thadeus called Ted. He is 9 ish; no one thinks his name is pretentious.

cumbria81 · 26/11/2010 15:10

No - don't do it.

mathanxiety · 26/11/2010 18:19

Love it (it has two Ds though, imo) and I don't think it's too pretentious (whatever that means). I love Tad or Thad as a nn.

I think it will become more popular as Theodore and Edward and all the other names that generate Ted as a nn become ever more popular and parents look for something along those lines but not specifically those names.

I think if you were being more 'out there' you'd be looking at names like Theophilus or Theodosius.

Dolittlest · 26/11/2010 18:22

It's a nice name. Thad a cool nn, but Ted is a bit of a stretch.

ThatllDoPig · 26/11/2010 19:36

Sounds a bit like Phallus!

But I like Ted

AphraBen · 26/11/2010 21:14

We know a Thaddeus who is 4 yrs old. Taddy is his nickname. suits him, its great.

mathanxiety · 26/11/2010 22:37

Thady (rhymes with shady) is an old-fashioned name you might hear sometimes in Ireland -- I believe it comes from Thaddeus. There's a ballad "The Bold Thady Quill".

mollymawk · 26/11/2010 22:52

I know a Thadeus and a Thaddeus. Neither of them is called Ted though. Tad or Taddy would be more realistic as a NN IMO - the name itself wouldn't strike me as pretentious but Ted as a NN might, TBH

BelligerentGhoul · 26/11/2010 22:59

I LOVE it. Have loved it since I was a teenager and my dad has mocked me for it ever since! Go for it: it's gorgeous - but I like Tad better as a nn than Ted. It has never entered my head that it could be pretentious.

lowrib · 26/11/2010 23:17

I love it, it's a great name. It's not pretentious.

MelinaM · 26/11/2010 23:28

It's a lovely name, not at all pretentious! I'd go with Thad as a nn tooSmile x
