Sophie vs Sophia

Our baby girl is due in less than a week and we are pretty much decided on 'Sophie Beatrice' although I prefer 'Sophia Beatrice.' Have tried to convince hubby (subtly and not so subtly) but to no avail. Does 'Sophie Beatrice' still sound pretty? The middle name is a family name for us both so at least we both agree on this part - what are the chances of my lovely hubby changing his mind once she is born or should I give up on Sophia?!

Sophie Beatrice is very pretty but I don't understand your dh's objection to Sophia if he;s agreed on Sophie!

Good point! They're not that different are they? He said something once about it reminding him of the old lady from The Golden Girls! I was thinking more along the lines of Sophia Lauren!

I'm a Sophie and get complimented on my name a lot, personally I prefer Sophie to Sophia :)

Thanks everyone - it's so useful to get some feedback as no one but us two - and now you!- even know that we are having a girl, never mind what her name might be. All your comments are really helpful; I can rest easy now I know that we have chosen a nice name and can stop trying to think of ways to make my poor hubby change his mind (I will hold off on the subliminal messages in his sleep!)

I like both but Sophia can have the nn sophie, so you could have both surely?

Lovely names. I prefer Sophia. My friend recently gave birth to a Beatrice Sofia.

It is the same name. Sophie is an Anglo-Saxon version of Sophia/Sofia, a name after a popular Greek and Eastern Orthodox saint.

The trouble with Sophia is that you never know how to pronounce it - is it Sofeee-a or Sofia - IYSWIM .

I don't agree with the above two posts. Sophia Beatrice doesn't flow at all, it's hard to say.

First name ends in -ia, second name begins with Bea-. So that's ee-a, be-a! It rhymes and sounds a little daft IMO. Sorry!

I much prefer Sophia. It sounds prettier than Sophie, which imo is a bit meh (I am biased - my daughter is a Sophia).

I also loathe people calling her Sophie as a nickname. She shortens it herself to Phia.

GetOrf - DD is also Phia and while she is too little to argue I call her Fi-Fi. :o

Less keen on Surf-ia. What about Sophia with the traditional pronunciation - So-fire. As in the actress Sophia Myles and the song by Nerina Pallot but criminally under-used!
