Lottie or Charlotte

Of course i went with my gut feeling and called my DD Lottie but my dad and grandparents kicked up quite a fuss, berating me for not allowing her the full name of Charlotte. I think Lottie sounds cute and chirpy and reflected her personality and face perfectly. I still get comments about how she should have been Charlotte..it's been a year. Are THEY being unreasonable? and what can i say to deter the comments?

Of course they're being unreasonable. she's your baby and Lottie is a perfectly serviceable name. Tell them that your other option wasn't Charlotte, but Aethelberga.

That'll shut them up.

Ignore and keep on with Lottie-I know a Charlotte who has always been Lottie-she is 18yrs now.
If your DD doesn't like it she can always change to Charlotte when older. They will give up when she is talking and well established as Lottie.

Re reading it-I am not sure whether you mean that she has Lottie on the birth certificate or Charlotte. Either way it is your choice.

Your choice. You could cite Lotte Lenya as a sophisticated precedent. Otherwise, just keep saying 'Aren't you funny to keep on about that, her name is Lottie' and change the subject.

Thank you. Sometimes it's nice to get outsiders' views! It seems natural to think mum/dad/grandad know best but now i'm the mum i need to do what i think! Thank you for the support!!

I love the name Lottie, ignore them, she's your baby and they should drop it.

That is rediculous, I'm not a mum but I joined here to let you know that my name is Lottie, it is written on my birth certificate... And I have never had any grief for being called lottie, people seem to like my name and I like it when people ask me if my full name is Charlotte because I like the individuality of my name... No one that I have ever come across has been an official Lottie and I like that because it keeps me from confusion, I love my name and it is proposterous that your family criticise you about calling your child Lottie... It is after all your child and not theirs! Much love, Lottie x

I know someone who named their daughter charlotte and the grandparents moaned when they called her lottie. Now they call her Charlie which annoys them more! You will always be bombarded with peoples opinions but I've learnt to say "I pushed her out - I get the final say". It might sound flippant but it's just a way of saying that parents need to make the big decisions for their children - you can't be trying to please everyone else - that way madness lies.
