Charlotte being abbreviated?

Love the name Charlotte but don't like either Charlie or Lottie much so wondering how many with the name end up shortened, even if the parents stick to Charlotte.

I have a few friends called Charlotte and they are occasionally shortened - one to Charlie and one to Charry/Sharry but only by good friends.

My friend named her daughter Charlotte and calls her Char, which I hate - takes all the niceness out of the name IMO! I think Charlie and Lottie are much nicer nicknames.

Whitershadeofpale · 10/11/2010 11:05

I've know a lot of people called Charlotte and all except two have always had a nn. As well as Charlie and Lottie, I've heard Chaz,Shaz, Char, Lotta, and one aften callled Charles!

idobelieveinfairies · 10/11/2010 11:09

Ohh i love the name Charlotte, Charlie and Lottie for a girl.

I don't think people will shorten it unless your DD prefers to be called by a abbreviated name when she is older.

gorionine · 10/11/2010 11:11

My Aunt is called charlotte and is Nnamed "Lotti"

expectingno3 · 10/11/2010 12:48

I think Lotta is a lovely name in itself.

LittleDonkin · 10/11/2010 14:45

my niece gets Cha Cha!!

CharlieBoo · 10/11/2010 19:53

My niece is 12 and she has always been Charlotte, never had a nickname for it. Although now I think she's older she would like one, but its tough to suddenly be called Charlie or Lottie when you never have before. Lovely name.

LillianGish · 10/11/2010 20:02

If you love the name, but hate the abbreviations I'd find something else. My dcs both have names which can be abbreviated, but to forms I can live with. By the way I think Charlotte is gorgeous and could take any abbreviation apart from Char(Shar)!

Lynli · 10/11/2010 20:39

My DD is Charlotte, I chose it because I like it and the short version Charlie.

All of her friends call her Chaz.

Celia76 · 10/11/2010 21:01

I really like Lotta, but maybe not ideal if DD is well built!

Berk · 11/11/2010 09:10

I love the name Charlotte and though it's a stretch would use Kitty as a nn.

PGWomble · 11/11/2010 12:17

I'm a Charlotte. People try and call me Char which I can't stand. Other than that no nn- it's a long name on paper but only 2 syllables!!

Hedwig3 · 11/11/2010 12:35

I know an adult Charlotte who is always Charlotte except for her family sometimes calling her Lotts Smile

TitsalinaBumSquash · 11/11/2010 12:36

I have always been Charlee to the point where i don't answer to Charlotte becuase it just doesn't register that they are talking to me!

TrillianAstra · 11/11/2010 12:40

If you hate the abbreviations then choose something else.

You may not ever abbreviate it but that won't stop your DD from deciding that she wants to be called a nickname.

rachel234 · 11/11/2010 13:50

The Charlotte I know is known as Charlie. It suits her.

I agree - if you don't like the nicknames, then I'd reconsider.

RibenaBerry · 11/11/2010 13:57

I agree, if you don't like the NN then don't do it. Aside from the fact that some people will shorten it, even if you don't, as your DD gets older it will be her call what name she uses. My mum hates the NN my brother is shortened too - but that's one that didn't cross her mind at the time. He likes it though, so she's stuck with it.

mopsyflopsy · 11/11/2010 13:59

I've heard Charlottes being called Char/Shar, Chaz, Charlie and Lottie. It will depend on your dd and her friends what nickname she ends up with, not sure you can do much about it.

Stardown · 12/11/2010 17:12

My DP is called Charlotte and never gets called anything else.

Char occasionally by family but they are in a different part of the country where it's more common to shorten all names. So her brother Stephen gets called Ste Confused

Coco9 · 18/11/2010 14:31

Yes think it's better to avoid Charlotte if we don't like the (possibly inevitable) nicknames. Thanks

One of my best friends is Charlotte, she has thus far made in to the grand old age of 26 without being called Lottie/Charlie or Char or any other nn associated with Charlotte! It;s a beautiful name, I think you just have to be firm with peopleSmile x

I'm a Charlotte - have never shortened it and have always liked it. I think its a name you can grow up with

Komondor · 22/12/2010 12:29

My best friend is Charlotte, and its never been shortened.

trilottie · 22/12/2010 12:47

I'm a Charlotte and I hate people calling me anything but Charlotte! I'm not a big fan of my name anyway, but never mind, I'm stuck with it now :)
