Ok, so I think we have a shortlist of names for girls. All opinions welcome! Surname is 1 syllable. We already have a Naomi Georgia.

I've put them in order of my preference. DH lukewarm about all of them, but hasn't come up with any alternatives. I do have a couple of niggles about them but can't think of any others I like that DH doesn't hate (he's vetoed quite a few including Rachel, Emma, Isobel, Helen etc).

Evangeline (But I would shorten to Evie which I know lots of people hate! Wondering if pregnancy hormones and watching Nanny McPhee may be addling my brain.)

Josephine (But I hate Jo as NN, don't mind Josie or Sephy as NN)

Marianne (Concerned she would spend whole life spelling name and insisting it isn't Marion or Mary-Anne)

Lydia (DSis hates this, as do MIL and SIL)

Not sure about middle name - might use combination of the above, or have Iris which is a song I love (Goo Goo Dolls). If I can persuade DH that is :o

For a boy we only have Joseph on our shortlist, but at least that makes the choice easier if it turns out to be a boy!

Thanks

I like Josephine/Josie but I'm not keen on Stephy.

Marianne I'm not keen on tbh

Lydia I really like :)

itisntreallyme · 09/11/2010 14:39

Josephine is my favourite

cumbria81 · 09/11/2010 15:16

I like Marianne.

Lydia is OK.

Josephine is horrid, as is Evanegeline.

loonies · 09/11/2010 15:28

Lydia goes really well with Naomi

Marianne is nice but a bit old-fashioned I think

Evanegeline is a bit out there I think. Evie is lovely but quite popular.

Josephine is lovely as is Josie but I'm not keen on Jo

Can you not have Iris as a first name

ThatllDoPig · 09/11/2010 15:32

I agree with loonies about Lydia. Not over keen on the others, but I do like Josephine. Why don't you like Jo for short? If you had a Joseph, he would probably get called Joe. ?
Do you like Phoebe?

LoopyLoops · 09/11/2010 15:34

I quite like Lydia and Iris, and I'm sorry for being brutal but the others are all really old-fashioned and fussy. Evangeline is my least favourite.

LoopyLoops · 09/11/2010 15:36

BTW Evie is fine, it's the full Evangeline that I find horrible.

diddl · 09/11/2010 15:42

Lydia is tops for me.

Hannah?

MunchMummy · 09/11/2010 15:50

I'm a Naomi and my sister is Charlotte.
Don't like Lydia or Josephine, but love Marianna. Knew a little portugese girl called this and she was lovely.

Teds77 · 09/11/2010 15:56

Probably Josephine (Josie) or Lydia. Like Iris.

Layla/Laila?

Always associated Ruth (which is lovely) with Naomi because of the bible story.

deepbluewave · 09/11/2010 16:09

I like Emma and Isobel.

Wholelottalove · 09/11/2010 16:36

Never thought of Iris as first name, mainly as our surname begins with an S.

I loved Lydia and thought it went very well with Naomi, but have been put off by the strong negative reactions of family. Maybe I'll just say stuff 'em and go with it anyway!

I also love Ruth, but this was vetoed by DH unfortunately. I might be able to slip it in as a middle name.

thatlldo I have no idea why I dislike Jo for a girl as I quite like Joe for a boy so would be happy for Joseph to be shortened to that. Goodness only knows why. I am weird!

I think we might have to wait until the baby arrives. Maybe it will be a boy and problem solved.

I adore Josephine. She's my hypothetical dd2. I like Posey and Phin as abbreviations.

I don't love Evangeline. What about Genevieve which has a similar feel? And you can abbreviate it to Evie if you like that.

Um, Hazel is a bit like Ruth and Iris in terms of feel too.

Ruth is beautiful. My great grandma was a formidable Ruth.

LoopyLoops · 09/11/2010 17:27

Umm, are there any that your DH likes?

Hedwig3 · 09/11/2010 18:01

Evangeline with a short middle name would be lovely.

mathanxiety · 09/11/2010 19:04

Josephine Iris would be gorgeous. Josie is nicer than Sephy as a nn.

Or Josephine Ruth (but maybe forget this one if your DH hates Ruth).

Would you consider Keziah, Zoe or Matilda?

Wholelottalove · 09/11/2010 19:16

Loopy my DH is a PITA with names. Tends to veto almost everything without coming up with any productive suggestions himself Hmm . He likes Evie but thinks Evangeline is a bit OTT. He also quite liked Lydia, not wild on Josephine but coming round to it.

We have a Josie and no-one has ever shortened it to Jo.

I'm no help here, though, as I love all your names!

earlgreyismynectar · 10/11/2010 07:27

Posy is a lovely short form for Josephine

batsforlashes · 10/11/2010 08:32

Lydia and Naomi by a mile . Two of my two five girls names ever. Lovely.

HelenaRose · 10/11/2010 09:24

Evangeline - beautiful
Josephine - same as you, I love Josie
Marianne - I knew a lovely lady called Marianne
Lydia - this is my niece's middle name

I like Josephine (Josie/Posy) best of all. :)

Josephine Lydia is a nice combination!

tigermaj · 10/11/2010 09:36

Josephine Ruth is lovely, although I am biased as I know one!

SE13Mummy · 10/11/2010 23:10

Lydia is lovely and goes brilliantly with Naomi. I know a Lydia Ruth too - a great name for a great girl.

Bethany, Madeleine, Miriam, Rebecca, Keziah and Anna are other names I think go well with Naomi.
