Right, I give in, I need help!

We're having no problem choosing boys names for imminent no 2, but for some reason we're really struggling with girls names. We have a short list -

Alice (DH says no, because of that stupid who the fuck is Alice song Hmm )
Dorothy
Penelope
Elizabeth

and while we like them all, there isn't one that is definitely the right name, which was the case for DD1.

We quite like literary references so that would be nice, but not essential.

Any more suggestions gratefully received in case the right name is out there, just not popped into our heads yet!

Thanks everyone, keep it coming - am going to show DH the thread to see if any other suggestions tickle his fancy, or if I can convince him that Alice is the way to go!

Laura? Laura and Alice are my 2 current favourites for bump... Not sure about having Alice with my first daughter's name of Annabelle though.

NoahAndTheWhale · 07/11/2010 21:56

On your shortlist is DD's name (no one has ever made mention of the Alice, Alice, who the..... song by the way Smile), my sister's name and my MIL's name. And your DD1's name is DD's middle name Smile.

People have suggested my name as well on here.

I like Josephine, but DH didn't like it. I also like Herminone, but DH definitely wouldn't let me Grin

AllliMummmy · 07/11/2010 22:42

Go with Alice!

I have an Alice and not once have I ever had anyone reference that song, never. Including some blokey-types that DH went to uni with.

TBH it wouldn't bother me if they did, but its never been a problem. Our Alice is named after someone anyway, so was always going to use the name, daft song or not.

blushingm · 08/11/2010 20:37

i'm alice and i used to get the 'who the f##k is alice' song a lot but i can't remember the last time - it was ages and ages ago so you needn't worry if that is the only thing putting you off - don't let it. If someone wants to make fun of a name they will find a way but that shouldn't have any bearing on the name you choose

WouldYouLikeMilkWithThat · 08/11/2010 21:03

The song wouldn't bother me at all - it's DH's reason for vetoing it Sad. I think I may have to cave in on it as he's really not for shifting.

can't have a Laura, but it's a good name mmsparkle, and goes nicely with Annabelle!

Go with Dorothy, nn Dotty, very beautiful, classic and different.

readywithwellies · 08/11/2010 23:49

How about changing Alice to Alys? Welsh version, not made up before someone suggests it is. On paper, no song reference? You could pronounce it Alice or A-Lease.

diddl · 09/11/2010 07:50

Lara?
Alicia?
Lucia?

my 9wk old bundle of gorgeousness is called Alice Elizabeth and we hve had an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the name.....not one mention of that ridiculous song.

and ive not come across any other alice's as yet....such a pretty name.

ignore ur DH. x

FluffMacDuff · 12/11/2010 20:25

Alice is beautiful and classic.

Would choose Dorothea nn Thea over Dorothy though.

onceamai · 12/11/2010 21:54

Our list also included:

Daisy
Louisa
Isabel

In the end we went for Alice and with hindsight I really like Poppy.

smaych · 13/11/2010 22:20

Dorothy is a lovely name, really lovely. So is Alice, but if your husband's not feeling it then there we go.

I think Penny is a lovely abbreviation of Penelope.

dontforgetthejoker · 14/11/2010 23:51

Another vote for Dorothea here. ( Dorothea Brooke literary ref too) Love Alice too, but now have that song in my head. Have never thought of it when I meet an Alice in RL tho' .
